Hornets: We owe no rent
Hornets: We owe no rent
Thursday, 5th Aug 2010 09:04 by Col

Hornets have responded to recent claims of non payment of rent, by declaring that they are now fully up to date with all of the monies owed to the Stadium Company.

Rumours have been doing the rounds for around a month now that rugby league side Hornets have fallen behind with their rent payments, with suggestions that nothing had been paid since May.

However, Hornets have finally responded in an email to their members and have stated that following a payment on Monday to the Stadium Company of £4700, they are now fully up to date with all funds owed, but concerns continue.

Hornets are citing that they are owed compensation for switching their pre-season friendly with Oldham to Mayfield at the back end of January when the Spotland pitch was considered unplayable. The original game was called off at a time when Dale had been unable to play a home game for four weeks, though the game at Mayfield was arranged for January 27th, the day after we played Port Vale at Spotland.

The Rugby side are also citing that they should not be required to pay full rent for a time of the year when they play fixtures away from Spotland over a period of six weeks to allow work to take place on the pitch.

Hornets statement read as follows:

Hornets are up to date with their rental payments(we hope all tenants can say the same). The latest money transfer happened on the 2nd of August for £4700 (paid in advance!) Hornets are in dispute though with the Stadium Co. over several issues, namely promised compensation for moving the Law Cup game, this issue now does look likely to have been/being resolved. The level of rent required when we are forced to play away from home for at least 6 weeks. There is a meeting early next week to resolve this matter. Finally a promised rent reduction of £10,000 per annum which again we hope will be resolved at next weeks meeting.

Hornets were formed from the ashes of the old Rochdale Hornets side which had an equal share holding in Spotland Stadium. Their time at Spotland was blighted by non rent payment on a widespread level, and when they went out of business, their shareholding went into the hands of the Rugby Football League authorities as they were used to guarantee a loan that they failed to repay.
