Southampton V Watford The Preview

All eyes will be focused on new signing Cyle Larin, who will probably start on the bench and will have to wait for the hour mark before he makes his debut. But the real focus must be on firstly the performance and most importantly the result.

With all the interest in the last few weeks being on the derby game with Portsmouth and the transfer window, it has escaped the attention of some that we have now gone 3 games unbeaten and that the hope of a play off spot has not yet ended.

But it does hang on a thread and we need to get three points out of this match if we are to have any chance of hanging on in there.

After the very strong performance at Stoke City, I do not expect to see many changes for this game, or even none at all.

Assuming no one has been injured then keep the same side Tonda and keep playing the same way.

But although we have lost some a few players in the transfer window, we will still have a strong starting line up and when you consider that the bench could include the likes of new signing Cyle Larin, Shea Charles, Jay Robinson, Ryan Manning, Joshua Quarshie, Nathan Wood, Elias Jelert, Cameron Archer, Cameron Bragg & Matsuki, that is 10 outfield players who new signing Larin aside have all made a reasonable contribution this season.

So there should be no excuses in this one, the truth is we will put out a starting XI that is underperforming and should be winning games like this and a second side that could hold it's own in this division.

So the time for excuses is over and the time for action has come, we cannot afford too many slip ups in the final 16 games or our play off hopes will be alll but over a long time before May.

Watford arrive at St Mary's in woeful form of late and manager Javia Gracia shock resignation is not going to help matters.

After a run of 4 straight wins at the end of December and early January propelled the Hornets up the table, but since then the last 5 League outings have seen them lose 2 and draw 3 with no wins.

That has seen them drop to 8th but still only 3 points off the play offs with 44 points, Saints of course start the day 4 points behind Watford and we really need to start making up the gap.

Watford's position though is mainly down to their home form, 8 wins and 5 draws has seen them collect 29 of their 44 points at Vicarage Road, whereas on the road just 3 win and 6 draws has made up the other 15.

So we go into this game as favourites, but that has been said many times before this season and now is the time to start proving it.

We have to be the side that played with discipline and without fear at Stoke City and not the side that lost tamely to Hull just 3 weeks ago, a result that seems an age away given all that has happened since.

Tonda Eckert has started to make his mark on the Saints squad, some of the dead wood has been trimmed, some of those part of the problem and not part of the solution are gone, we are in a different proposition than we were in late December/early January.

But the problem is we have been a work in progress and that is not good as time runs out in the fixture list, we now have no margin for error, we have to go out and be clinical, put together a run of wins that put us back in the promotion race.

As I said at the start, all eyes will be on Cyle Larin, much has been said about him on social media and message boards, some seem to have made their minds up before he has kicked a ball.

I would hazard a guess that few had heard of him before last week, so we should have an open mind and give him a chance, lets judge him on what he does this weekend and going forward and not what he has or hasn't done in the past.

But I have to say I am looking forward to going on Saturday and that hasn't been something I have said very often in the last 20 months !

If as suspected we start with Ross Stewart leading the line when he becomes tired we can put Larin on without having to change our shape or formation
Likewise I am looking forward to this game but still with a large degree of apprehension

I admire your positivity in believing Ross Stewart can last the hour without injuring himself.

Watford arrive at St Mary's in woeful form, says Nick. Obviously didn't watch their last game at Hull on Tuesday, where they were unlucky not to win, taking a point against a stronger team than Saints. There are no easy games in the Championship.

I also watched the Hull v Watford game. Watford were the better side. Tomorrow will not be easy.
