Portsmouth 1 v 1 Southampton
EFL Championship

Southampton V Portsmouth The Preview
Saturday, 24th Jan 2026 18:10

Make no mistake, whatever the supporters of both sides may say about the other being irrelevant, this is far more than a game of football, this is about two Cities, 20 miles apart who culturally have very little in common.

There is little I can say about this game, Portsmouth will kick off being 3rd from bottom in the Championship table and in the relegation zone, they are there for a reason and that is they are not a very good side and our job is to prove that.

In truth there side is not the best, but it pains me to say this, the issue to tomorrow is not the quality of their team, but how much their crowd will spur them on, 25 years ago Pompey were a poorly supported team struggling to get 10,000, but they have turned themselves into the "Best supporters in the World" due to one man who has convinced their supporters that singing non stop is the way forward.

Fratton On Sunday will be a bear pit, but we have to stand firm and quieten the crowd and then show them that quality is better than a man in a wig and ringing a bell.

Similar to our 4-0 win in 2019 we have dig in early doors and weather the early storm and then impose our class.

I do not expect Tonda Eckert to change the side much from Wednesday nights win over Sheffield United, the only change might be up front, is Ross Stewart ready for another start or should we play Adam Armstrong for his work rate and ability to close down.

As always I would say the difference should be the quality we have on the bench, assuming the same staring line up as Wednesday, they will not have the quality of Adam Armstrong, Shea Charles, Jay Robinson, Cameron Archer, even Joshua Quarshie.

This game is going to be about quality and more importantly our bottle.

We should go into this game with confidence, on the face of it we have a better team, they are in the bottom 3, the pressure is on them, lets Do IT !

I hope I’m wrong but I’ve just got a feeling that tomorrow is going to be a rerun of the game earlier in the season.

Mass build up with bucket loads of hype followed by an extremely poor match ending in a draw.

In any event, good luck to all the Saints fans who are enduring the bubble and be thankful that it only needs to operate for one away game a season.

I would try Stewart and Armstrong, dropping the inconsistent Azaz. Azaz not been anywhere near he form of last year. And stick to 4 4 2.

Agree Davenbennett and would send Manning down to uncle Billys in Southsea and give a few quid to make him stay
