Southampton V Leicester City The FA Cup Preview

Saints look to hunt down the Foxes for the second time this week, this time at St Mary's. Leicester have already said they are going to put out a strong team, but what will be Tonda Eckert's reaction to that.

Southampton and their supporters will go into this game still basking in the euphoria of what was the greatest ever comeback in the history of the club in the game at the King Power on Tuesday evening.

That is leading to some Saints fans thinking that this game will be a doddle against a Leicester side who are low on confidence and who had what little they had torn into shreds in that iconic last 30 minute finale up at the King Power.

The Foxes caretaker manager has already stated that he will be putting out s strong side as was revealed by The Daily Echo where he had this to say.

"It’ll be a little bit different, without the pressure of the three points, but that doesn’t take away from the importance of the game for me.

"We’ve not been on a good run, and we need a win to change the momentum and the course of our season. I want to go down there to be strong.

"Every game for this football club, while I’m in charge, will be important. There may be some players we have to manage as it is a three-game week."

"When you’re playing for this football club, we demand of each other that we try and win every game. We need momentum, we need wins.

"We want to build something going into the end of the year."

So King has made it clear that whilst he is in charge and given that he has lost all of his three games in the dug out, that might not be too long, that he sees the only way to get his team back into form is to play his strongest side week in week out.

So it will be interesting to see how Tonda Eckert responds to that, he has a bit of leeway in that after this game there is a full 7 days before the next one when Charlton visit St Mary's.

He will of course be aware that as was shown in the first half on Tuesday that some players are in need of a break, some because they are carrying injuries and others because they have played in virtually every game and need a rest after a hectic run of fixtures and another packed programme in the month after this game.

I would not be surprised to see George Long given the nod in this game, with Alex McCarthy out for a few weeks we are potentially exposed in the goalkeeping department, so If I was Tonda I would not be risking Daniel Peretz being injured or sent off.

This is nothing to do with his display at Leicester, it should be noted that after barely playing in 2 1/2 years, Peretz has played 7 games in the month since he arrived, the goalkeeping position is the most vulnerable to injury or suspension at this moment and if Peretz was to be unavailable, then we don't want a keeper in who has barely played.

In defence again there may be one or two rested, perhaps Joshua Quarshie or Nathan Wood coming in to the centre and it wouldn't surprise me to see Elia Jelert & Ryam Manning getting a start in the full back spots.

In the centre of midfield it could be all change, Shea Charles coming in for Caspar Jander who was one who had perhaps played a game too far and needs a rest in this one to re charge his batteries and I would not be surprised given he was a doubt for the trip to Leicester, Flynn Downes having a break.

Out wide again Leo Scienza has been carrying a groin strain although he got through the whole game on Tuesday, and Tom Fellows was another who seems to need a rest.

I expect Sam Edozie to start along with Matsuki.

Up front I would put money on Cyle Larin making his first appearance in the starting line up and perhaps Jay Robinson in the role behind him, although it could also see Cameron Archer playing alongside Larin in a front two.

What this highlights though is the strength of depth we have in the squad, that we can put out an experienced second XI and the strength we have on the bench at the moment.

So for this one I expect Tonda to make a few changes, not only to rest players, but to give some of those who haven't got much game time of late a chance to get a run out and show the manager what they can do and push for a place in the league line ups.

But although my team would include only 1 or 2 that started against Leicester on Tuesday, I think Tonda Eckert's selection will have a spine, perhaps 4 or 5 from that starting line up.

There has been an upsurge in tickets in the last day or so, but I am still a little disappointed that given the recent run of good form that has taken us to the cusp of the play off spots and culminating with that historic comeback on Tuesday evening that there haven't been more tickets sold.

There can be no excuse on price, Ok many have missed the early bird prices due to the disenchantment a few weeks ago when they were available, but £15 for adults and £5 for those under 18 is a very good price for a game that after Tuesday has taken on greater significance, I would hope that with the weather starting to improve that we will see a big late surge in the 24 hours leading up to the kick off.

Apart from the humiliation of being beaten twice in a week by Saints and the circumstances of Tuesday's game, I can't see Leicester wishing to field a strong team, when they are clearly in risk of dropping into Div 1. Equally, if you asked a 100 Saints fans whether they wanted promotion to the Premier League without huge investment in the team, I bet you wouldn't get many takers! So let's make a solid FA Cup run top priority and who knows how far we might go. After all, it is the 50th year anniversary.

Tonda has never shyed away from saying the club's target is promotion Taking that into account I expect upto 10 changes from Tuesdays staring 11 and 7 from the finishing eleven
I expect the whole ground to be chanting:-
Shall we give your team a start

Given the congestion in the Championship table and so many clubs' potential for the playoff spots, I wouldn't be surprised to see everyone in our division passing on the FA Cup.

Whichever line-up Tonda decides to use he must know that we cannot be relied on to play two decent halves. Too often this season we have either got off to a flyer or started abjectly, only to reverse that form in the second half. If Tonda wants to build consistency he shouldn't have to meddle too much with the starting eleven after all, the replacements would be the first choices if they were already good enough. If he's recovered from his hamstring tweak, I'd like to see Cameron Bragg start. If we are going to keep such a promising youngster then he should be given more game time.

None of the content of the preview post chimes with what Eckert said at his press conference which was, 'there will be a couple of changes' Nowhere did he suggest wholesale changes so it will be interesting to see who starts.
