Martinez Signs A Two Year Contract

Martinez Signs For Two Years

The official site is reporting that Roberto Martinez has signed a two year contract to return to the Vetch next season after several weeks of talks between the midfielder, Brian Flynn and the directors of the club. Martinez has been the one that the fans have wanted and many have pinpointed him as the player who was most responsible for us keeping our league status next season - something which was hard to argue with in many places.

Roberto arrived at the Vetch last season initially on loan from Walsall and played a major part in the great escape with his ability to control the game from midfield and make everything revolve around him. He was an instant hit with the fans and make a total of 19 appearances for the side last season, finding the net on two occasions.

The news that he has signed a two year contract at the Vetch will increase optimism amongst the support and may even lead to some of the 'shall I or shan't I brigade" renewing their season tickets ahead of next weeks early discount deadline.

Talks with Martinez started soon after the Swans had secured their safety with a 4-2 final day win over Hull and had dragged on for weeks through telephone calls, face to face meetings and last week's trip to London for chairman Huw Jenkins and fellow director Dave Morgan to try and get him to sign. However, with talks seemingly dragging on, many were giving up hope of signing the midfielder. However, today's news can prove a theory that no news is good news?

There still remains the fact that there are more pieces to be put into the 2003/2004 jigsaw as far as Swansea City are concerned but at the same time, this will add some optimism to the fans ahead of the new season which is now less than 7 weeks away.

Who will be next into the door marked 'entrance'?

Sometimes it's nice to be proved wrong!

Brave Swans in memorable game at Carrow Road
It was a pulsating game to watch and very much one of my favourite away games of the season. The Swans looked an entirely different side to that we saw at Middlesbrough when it is clear a catalyst for commitment was agreed behind the scenes at Swansea City. To a man every player grafted and wore the shirt with pride. To see the players really acknowledge the Swans support at Carrow Road this afternoon was emotional.
