Jordi Welcoming Fernandez Competition

If there was one player that you would assume would be worried by the recent arrival of Federico Fernandez then it would be Jordi Amat but he is welcoming of his friend to the Liberty Stadium and seemingly happy to challenge for the position alongside Ashley Williams

Admittedly everyone is assuming that it is Amat that is likely to made way following the arrival of the Argentinian international but there is no reason why it has to be Amat - we should be firm believers of playing the two in form players and Ashley Williams should be just as 'at risk' as anyone should his form dip at any point this season.

To date there is no sign though that the form of either Williams or Amat is giving us cause for concern and Amat in particular has shone in the two games that he has played this season since the sudden departure of Chico Flores from the club.

Amat cost the Swans £2.5m last summer and made few appearances last season thanks to the form of Flores and Williams but this season he is now the man in position and I would imagine that he is keen to retain that position despite the big capture of Fernandez this week.

"Federico is a good friend of mine, and he will bring more competition for places at centre-back,” said Amat.

"That’s great for the club — he’s a very good player, and I know he will bring a lot of quality to the club too.

"It’s great to have him here. I spoke to him before he arrived here and I told him what a great club this is.

"Now we are team-mates, and he will settle in very well here at Swansea.”

Amat was talking after he had helped the Swans to a clean sheet and a 1-0 win over Burnley that lifted them to second place in the league after a perfect two games which has seen them also win at Old Trafford for the first time ever in the league.

Amat puts much of that down to the pain that they have been through pre-season which now sees them reaping the benefits with the results.

There has been some talk of Amat also potentially moving to right back which would be an interesting move and one that could see him line up alongside Williams and Fernandez rather than instead of one of them. Whether he has the forward play to suit the Swans style in that position is up for debate but it is certainly an idea that should never be dismissed especially given the fact that Amat always looks so comfortable on the ball.

Amat is a rarity around Swansea these days - a Spaniard that is still here - but given his early performances it is fair enough to say that he will have a big part to play this season and the more we can have three centre halves on form the better it is for us as a team.

Brave Swans in memorable game at Carrow Road
It was a pulsating game to watch and very much one of my favourite away games of the season. The Swans looked an entirely different side to that we saw at Middlesbrough when it is clear a catalyst for commitment was agreed behind the scenes at Swansea City. To a man every player grafted and wore the shirt with pride. To see the players really acknowledge the Swans support at Carrow Road this afternoon was emotional.
