Crystal Palace Are Beaten And Newcastle Draw

Finally on our Sunday round up there is news from the Chris Morgan testimonial at Sheffield United while Crystal Palace are beaten in the final of the Cape Town Cup.

Crystal Palace 0 Sporting Lisbon 2

A brace by Fredy Montero clinched the Cape Town Cup for Sporting Lisbon as they beat Palace in the final of the competition.

The Eagles had more than matched their Champions League bound opponents for 70 minutes but the Colombian striker’s introduction turned the game in their favour as he scored a free-kick before completing a late counter-attack to condemn Alan Pardew’s side to defeat.

Alan Pardew: "That was as close as a competitive game as you’ll get during pre-season

"I’m so pleased with that game, it was just what we wanted. Of course not the result but that was a Europa League-standard quality game out there today on that pitch.

"Unfortunately the referee had no concept of European football so almost every challenge was a free-kick and we’re not used to that and we probably gave away eight or nine free-kicks around our box and we usually average about two. In the end they managed to score one and that changed the game."

Sheffield United 2 Newcastle 2

Newcastle drew 2-2 at Bramall Lane in the testimonial game for long standing Blades player Chris Morgan.

Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Siem de Jong helped had twice given the visitors the lead but goals from Mark McNulty and Kieron Freeman earned the home side the draw.

Swansea City : The facts on players in and out and the strategy behind it
This week has seen some bad financial news for the Swans, and of course more questions than answers yet again. That aside there is some great news from the age grade side at U21 as once again we see a player knocking on the door of the first team squad.

Gwyn’s Eye View : Swansea City v Millwall
Glyn is back with his favourite stats as we build up to the last game of the season. That comes in the form of Millwall who it seems are close to selling their requested 1,148 allocation, so its down to the Jack Army to do their bit this bank holiday weekend.
The fate today’s Swansea footballers would never have to endure
Swansea City bring this season to a close on Saturday with a home game against Millwall. However, what about those bygone days when footballers had no choice but to go down the pit after their career ended, or open a toy shop, pub or retrain ? That thought would petrify todays modern footballer.
Jamal Lowe : Still to be contacted regards his future at Swansea, Langstaff update
We have been told by numerous Swansea fans of a chance meeting in a service station between Jamal Lowe and those returning from Norwich yesterday. Nothing in that or indeed the conversation they had yesterday. Indeed there has to be some interpretation from what we know already on Jamal Lowe.
Brave Swans in memorable game at Carrow Road
It was a pulsating game to watch and very much one of my favourite away games of the season. The Swans looked an entirely different side to that we saw at Middlesbrough when it is clear a catalyst for commitment was agreed behind the scenes at Swansea City. To a man every player grafted and wore the shirt with pride. To see the players really acknowledge the Swans support at Carrow Road this afternoon was emotional.
