The news has been welcomed in recent days that the swans are in discussions with Crawley Town regards their prized striker Max Watters, and indeed other discussions surrounding players at Arsenal and Spurs. However, Swansea City have made their offers, they’ve made their interest known and won’t be forced in to over payment for untested players at championship level.
This is what we know to date regards Max Watters, there has been some interest in him by Swansea, to the extent talks regards a five hundred thousand pounds move in late December were confirmed. That offer today we know is still on the table, and Swansea are sticking to their guns regards further dialogue. The issue for Julian Winter is the insistence of Ziya Eren, Crawley’s owner that a seven figure deal is his value. Eren has earned his money from working from the bottom up, from the most basic jobs to now owning five per cent of the Turkish steel and metal industry. His board are Turkish British or Turkish and his business contacts are a theme throughout his club which is not registering any extreme debt. Basically Crawley Town are a well run and visionary club with people at the helm who have invested millions since 2016 and the club itself is not suffering greatly as a result,of Covid-19. He is obviously an astute businessman, who now in his fifties has much experience in negotiating deals.

So, why does any of this matter ? Well, quite simply Crawley may well be able to hold out for a higher fee for Watters as January moves on. Swansea themselves were in a similar situation with Spurs last year, in the end as the days drew close a last minute deal was thrashed out. Swansea will be happy enough to go to Barnsley on Saturday with Lowe and Ayew again spearheading the attack, who in this league wouldn’t ? The signal of intent spoken about on the weekend doesn't worry Steve Cooper, he will happily manage his squad and deal with what he has, not what he may have, that much he has made clear. Of course supporters want new players, and to an extent Swansea City do as well, losses of certain loan players this month have been a blow to future plans. With Gyökeres now in the throws of another loan to another championship club via a deal with Malmo, Palmer gone and Morgan Gibbs-White recalled it isn’t press the distress button just yet. However, in any event if the swans are to be seen as competent promotion contenders the players they want in should be aware and know how much the club wants them.
This month presents a massive chance for the clubs majority shareholders to support the final push to return to the premier league, and in itself place them in a far better position to sell the club if that remains their wish.
The Watters situation has gone quiet, he has after all commanded some very silly quotes on his worth, not least from his clubs owner. The swans will be happy to play the long game for him, no other clubs are anywhere near close to him as Swansea. Yes, that can change in a minute, but this time of the month in any transfer window It traditionally goes quiet. Clubs either being so far away from a deal they give up, or as we suspect at Swansea with what we know, it’s more of a waiting game. Whoever blinks first isn’t the issue, a realistic fee is 750k with add ons and instalments, maybe even a player exchange if it suits all, in any event the quiet time’s are normal.
