We have left the potential transfer of Cody Drameh to one side over the last few days, there are a number of reasons, not least Leeds United and their continued stubbornness regards any dealings with Swansea City. But more realistically it wasn’t news, the swans made an inquiry, Leeds weren’t interested, they wanted a few million pounds plus add ons, now that does become the news.
When Swansea City made an approach for Drameh last week it was only one of possibly six other inquiries made either directly or indirectly by the club over the past seven days. Including one in the championship. How hard it is for us and others at times to grasp the daily dealings of any football club has been well evidenced since the inception of Swansea Independent. We may play in black and white (ish) but nothing on a daily basis regards negotiation, understanding, the factors involved or even the players involved registers in the world of black and white.
We could make a bold prediction now regards a striker who could well be a swans player by the end of the month, he is part way through the early stages of making a choice between the swans and four other clubs. It’s a loan deal but quite sensibly he is looking at how those teams start the season, and indeed if the manager who signs him today will be there tomorrow.
On Cody Drameh he is just what the swans require. A defender predominately preferring the right side, but can play on the left. He would automatically become a first choice in Russell Martin’s first eleven, and would indeed be of benefit as the season progresses. The conversations between Leeds and Swansea came to an end as such when the differences between the clubs were not even negotiable. Obviously the swans want a loan for the season, however Leeds want a permanent deal, and as we know as things stand financially Swansea City just don’t have the ready cash to complete a deal. And then if they did and went back with an offer Leeds would prolong the discussions, Dan James and his non move to Elland Road seems to be a difficult thing for Leeds to get over.
This was highlighted last season over the potential move of Sam Greenwood to Swansea. It just seems an impossible and therefore pointless situation to get over. Okay, Leeds could become more flexible as the month moves on, but Drameh is a very desirable proposition, and there are clubs in the championship with the cash to bring him into their club. There’s no doubt that if another club came in Swansea City would be out in the cold.
Drameh has only five appearances for Leeds, hence the reason a premier league club are asking for a significant fee (by Swansea standards) for a player who can then only evidence a loan spell at Cardiff last season, albeit a successful one. We saw the failings of the swans back in January when Matt O'Riley went to Celtic, and is now so well thought of his price tag is in millions of pounds. The evidence of Martin’s transfer market awareness was reflected in the sale of Flynn Downes, and the acquisition of Harry Darling. Nobody can argue with that.
We feel this Drameh drama will resurface over the coming days and weeks, but it won’t be a permanent transfer at the figures we are quoted. Not unless another loan from a caring ‘director’ is in the pipeline, and it’s highly unlikely that will happen.
