Missed chances, offsides and at last the Swans win at Blackburn Rovers
Swansea City made hard work of it, but three points are three points despite the second half pressure from the home side.
Liam Cullen’s sweet strike was fit to win any football match as six hundred Swans fans cheered on their side under cloudy sky’s in Lancashire. It was a deserved win but had the Swans taken their chances especially in the first twenty minutes of the second half it could have been so much more. However, we can’t complain at all, it was a rare win for the Swans at this ground.
The visitors looked more accomplished on the ball after a dodgy first fifteen minutes where the Riversiders pressed and could have scored from a cross shot from Callum Brittain. The Swans gradually eased their way in to the game. If the first Swansea goal which was flagged offside was touch and go, the second from my angle was very much onside. The referee’s assistant was behind play as a through ball from the Swans defence was jumped on by Jamal Lowe. He coolly slotted the ball away and looked horrified that referee Martin had ruled it out.
Minutes later another cool move from the Swans, composed and deliberate saw Liam Cullen dig out his chance running parallel with the Rovers penalty area before unleashing a superb curling shot. The home side had a chance through Hill and Jerry Yates had an effort saved as the game swung towards either side. You just felt a second Swans goal would bury the game though.
In the second half Jamie Paterson robbed the ball from Scott Wharton but wasn’t composed enough to put his shot away for a second Swans goal in front of the travelling fans. Rovers threw on five substitutes in pursuit of an equaliser, it didn’t happen but they did have their chances. Harrison Ashby had a flash shot across the Rovers area that just went by the post as the Swans pressed for a second. However, the Swans held firm, especially Carl Rushworth in goal scooping up two on target efforts. It was an unlikely victory, it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Swans in nearly fifty three years, but all bad things as well as good come to an end.
What we now need to see is a run of consistency and continuity both on and off the pitch as the Swans have a whole week to prepare for their next game at home to Sunderland next Saturday.
