Swansea City women : Is this their biggest game yet ?

The Swans take on Wrexham this afternoon in the Genero Adran Premier League at the Swansea.Com Stadium ( KO 5.10pm ) By all accounts this is a game which has attracted thousands of people according to Chairman Andrew Coleman.

Not only that if you can’t make it to the stadium it’s LIVE on S4C.

Coleman has given the game a high profile in his latest brief from inside the club. "It will be the first time they have played here since turning semi-professional and being fully integrated into the club in the summer – a move we want to ensure becomes a seminal moment for Swansea City. A number of these players and staff have dedicated their lives, and made considerable sacrifices, to represent and be part of Swansea City Women. For them to walk out at our stadium in front of thousands of fans, something many might never have thought would be possible, will hopefully help inspire the next generation of footballers in our community and in Wales”

Little has been said about other investment in to the women’s game in Swansea, which has been supported for years before the current Chairman arrived. " Sunday’s fixture falls during the international break for our men’s team, who have enjoyed a more consistent run of form with five wins and two draws from the last ten matches. The ambition to be a competitive Championship team that should be challenging for promotion has not changed, nor have my expectations. But there also has to be realism following considerable change across the playing squad and club”

That sounds a tad ominous for January.

Chris Church, the Swans interim head coach is delighted to see the women’s side not only play in front of a healthy crowd but for the game to be televised. "It’s great that we get to play there, it’s great for the players and hopefully we can put on a show for the fans there on the day and get the three points that we need. I’ve been at this club for the best part of ten years now and every time I’ve been to the stadium, it’s lit a bit of a fuse inside me that I want to be on that touchline. So, to get the chance on Sunday to represent this great club means a lot to me and to everyone connected with the team. It’s a massive reward for the players, all the hard work that has been put in week in and week out, and hopefully this is something that continues going forward. We have to look at from the first game against Wrexham and what they are doing at the moment, they’ve done really well and they will be a tough outfit”

Swans midfielder, Nieve Jenkins certainly sums up the excitement of what it is like to play in big games such as this. "I’m excited, it’s another opportunity to play at the stadium, the last couple of times we’ve played there we’ve had amazing crowds, so we are all really looking forward to it, Any young girl would dream of playing at a stadium like the Swansea.com Stadium, so it’s really great to have another opportunity. It is another amazing experience, and for the fans it’s another opportunity to see what we have to offer and what is possible. When you hear the young girls and boys shouting, even the adults as well, it really pushes you right to the end. We will look to put on a really good match, with the way that women’s football is going at the moment it will be really good for young girls and boys watching on. It means everything to the team, it’s further steps along the way for the club going forward, we are doing things and having experiences that have been a long time coming. We’ve won multiple trophies and titles and I think the next step for women’s football is to be playing in these kinds of stadiums”

We can only wish the Swans the very best as they look to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.

It happens a lot would be the recollection from the Sheehan era. Unfortunately It still happens is the comment on Vitor Matos’s stewardship to date. Having got themselves into a position to take a point away from the New Den an added time winner from Millwall undone all the Swans hard work.

Swans scrap it out to beat the Baggies
There were some worried looks when Swansea head coach, Vitor Matos announced his starting eleven against West Bromwich Albion, not least the fact he had no striker in the team. It turned out to be a masterstroke despite a fifteen minute period in the second half, and some uneasy moments at the end of this Championship fixture.
