Vulnerable seems to have morphed somewhat as regards its traditional meaning to encompass those who really are not in danger or peril or risk of any sort

Aye sure I've done alright and I myself haven't been shafted maybe, but will I be able to afford to buy a house before I'm 40? Will there be an NHS or welfare system left for me should, god forbid, I need it? Most importantly my generation, or my children's will have to live with affects of climate change after decades of inaction.
Kids leaving school now already don't have the same opportunities available to them that I did.
It don't matter to me if he hasn't come up with the idea's himself, he is the one in the leadership race and those are the things he is standing for. I like what he is saying and agree with it. He seems to me far less of a parrot than anyone else out there. |

The title cartoon showed Millie standing outside Islington Town Hall and in the background was a sign saying 'Islington Council : 20,000 Lesbians Gainfully Employed'. A splendid and funny summary of that lot, who are mostly unchanged from the politics of UCL early to mid eighties which is where they all come from (the ones that actually came up with this stuff, not Corbyn who latched onto them all). | | | |

The lefties want him to lead Labour back to their socialist principles. The centre and right want him to lead Labour into electoral oblivion.

I love the way that all these 'centre-ists' think that the Blair witch phenomenon didn't owe a massive amount to the cluster**k of Tory unelectability too. Hague, Duncan-moron and Howard had many tories leaping at Thatcher's apprentice. Now they've all gone back to the labelled tories and will stay there.
The key for labour might well be a message of hope for the millions that don't turn out (CMD was elected with about 24% of the registered electorate) and many of those are young folk that Gideon is busy grinding under his heel.
Sadly, the donkeys that are in this leadership derby are fit for nothing more than pedigree chum, so there is no chance of anything like that actually happening, unless the posh boys implode amongst themselves. Labour (and the clue is in the name maybe) should not go near a leadership election until they've worked out what they are for. may as well let Harman stumble hopelessly on until then.

Well it partly depends on whether you remain a student of course :-)
But if not, then yes, you will just have to do what I did in my late twenties and buy a crappy, tiny, ex council flat in a not great area, take in a lodger and work up from there. Prior to that I rented a room for years which is exactly what my grandparents' generation all did as well.
And kids leaving school do have opportunities if they are willing to work, put themselves out and don't expect to achieve greatness by the time they are 22. Expectations are mad these days. We all want great jobs to be on our doorsteps - they never have been - people have always had to compromise, to move around, to start at the bottom and slum it a bit. Unfortunately there is a generation that have been brought up on 18 year olds bemoaning what will come of them if they don't get through on X Factor.
Now what I do believe passionately about is that schools have to prepare those kids to grasp the opportunities that they may have - in a lot of cases they don't and we should move heaven and hell to improve education. But you won't get there with someone like Corbyn who went to a good grammar school, sent his own kids to a grammar school (albeit he reckons it was because of his wife and he disagreed with it - they still went there) and wants to take that opportunity away from anyone else. I'm not saying that's the answer, but equalising everyone to the lowest possible common denominator isn't the answer either.
We need to give people aspiration and ambition and the tools to achieve what it is that they want to achieve - it's pretty easy for the lefty Islington lovies since they had it handed to them in spades. | | | |

Touched on a key point there - expectations. They are extremely high these days.
I was watching an interview a couple of years ago, will never forget it. A female was being asked questions about what she expected when she left Uni (she was waiting for her results) and her ambition and expectation was that she believed that there was a a "£50k a year, middle management job" waiting for her as she now had qualifications. Granted, this was the SE, but what planet are they are?
People have no "right" to expect everything handed to them on a plate. You cant just sit there and expect it, you have to compromise and change your lifestyle acordingly. I had to and im sure many others on here have had to. I blame the softly-softly 'oh you finished ninth - dont worry, we are all winners here' brigade! |  |

Actually in my experience of them they are often both.
I have been to many Arsenal games over the years (Highbury rather than the Emirates, which they all dismiss as a bit 'corporate') with that lot - Clock End of course :-)
I even persuaded a few to join me in watching the Swans at the Orient (back on that old away bank there before they too became a bit posh).

Ironically enough, I was doing some research on mortgages the other day and Barclays are apparently prepared to lend me upwards of £300k. I was tempted to ask how much of it they expected me to pay back.
