Peter Sellers and a good film, a subtle critique of Unions too.

Anyway, I ve always wondered why countries formally sviet/Stalinist/socialisy republics are now CAPITALIST and would never go back to the old repressive regimes.
They were countries that had no personal freedom/couldn't even leave the country without getting shot.

We in the west, re and have been free to go as we please yet we have many who simply love the principles which the old socialist states adhered to.

Ive bad news too as life is not fair, never has been and its always beenthe case of there being rich poor and us in the middle. Its therefore our RIGHT to look after ourselves and our families and our country before anyone or anywhere else.

Now, this is how it is . Really it is.

Its been said there is a huge difference between socialsm and Stalinism. Not really, its what happens when matters are taken to extremes.

Social ownership/control is not popular with British.

The situation we have at the moment is a case of an extreme, it is capitalist extremism. Taking steps back towards the centre ground is a good thing and to get back to the centre ground we have to head left. It won't make it an oppressive communist state, but it might make it a fairer state. We need to find a happy balance between free market capitalism and socialism, seems to work well in Germany and Scandinavia why not here.

Upthecity!

Agree with that but it's maybe not in the British psyche.

We need managers to lead and manage first and foremost.

This doesn't often happen here so class obsessed are we.

Bin the civil list for all except queens siblings, then have a government truly for all the people.

I don't.

I'd happily vote for a party which would see me less well off if it would make a fairer society than the one we have now.

Tell me Perch. What's this Christianity you believe in all about?

"What's this Christianity you believe in all about?"

It's all about following this bearded bloke who was very much against banks and moneylenders and showed undue concern for the poor and dispossessed. Didn't like wars much either.

I quite like the alliteration of altruistic angels I must say Perch. Although to be honest, I'm equally impressed when you just blindly chuck letters at the screen and see what sticks as normal.

But on your point, putting others before one's excess and greed is not the same as putting others before oneself is it?

Otherwise, by the inevitable end game on your logic, you can't really blame someone who has nothing, and nothing to lose, coming to Perch Towers with a gun and taking everything you have for themselves. Then where would we be. Well, Johannesburg, obviously.

I suspect if some beardy bloke these days pretended to be the messiah, was very much against banks and moneylenders and showed undue concern for the poor and dispossessed; didn't like wars much either, he'd either be sectioned or be frontrunner to lead Labour...

Wouldn't get any argument from me if all taxes were properly progressive, and tax was used as a tool for repairing the bankers excesses rather than systematically demonising people not at fault. The problems with the NHS will all be the doctors fault next, just like the problems with education are all the fault of the teachers and, oh yes, the problems with crime are all the fault of the police.

Tax-spend-redistribute-stimulate

The rich will still be rich, the better off will still be better off, the propertied will still be the luckiest people in the UK.

In my day it was called the multiplier, and everyone ends up better off in what is effectively a zero sum game, rather than just a few..

If we are celebrating vegetarians with controversial policies and distinctive facial hair may I take this opportunity to raise a glass of Lowenbrau to Der Fuhrer. Like Corbyn he was very misunderstood and also just wanted a better deal for the downtrodden and betrayed people who flocked to support him.

Eine Kleine Nacht Musik if you please. Prost !!

I wonder what 'progressive' taxes would look like? I can hazard a guess - 'tax the rich'. But who exactly are the rich? If it refers to, say, the top 1% of taxpayers, I understand they already pay 30% of all taxes collected. How much more should they contribute?- oh you want it a-l-l! I see.
In a competitive world Corbynite economics would cripple the British economy. I imagine a lot on here cannot remember the brain drain of the 60s and 70s. Anyone with ambition, energy, drive and gumption who wanted to better their lot, packed their bags and got the hell out before Dennis Healey hit them with his 93% tax rate. Is that we need eh boys?

Our greatest ever modern era Prime Minister, Mrs M Thatcher, summed it up:

"You don't make poor people rich by making rich people poor". It's a bit more complicated than that.

I find it curious that this thread has run to 28 pages. A year from now, we'll look back on this with bemusement. Corbyn is a non-entity who is exciting the usual suspects - militant unions, universities, public sector workers alarmed by change, and the radical young who want to change the world. But the mass of the general public look on with mild passing interest and get on with the business of living their lives productively and responsibly. Most people have no interest in politics. There's an old saying "if not your not left wing when you're young, you have no heart. If you're still left wing when you're old, you have no brain." Britain is getting older.
