I agree with putting troops on the ground but when it comes to just air strikes then we should not take part in that. there is more chance of killing innocent Syrians by just bombing and i dont want us to be a part of that......get troops on the ground is the only way we as Europeans can defeat isis... | | | |

Only dipped into this thread, but the former General in charge of all NATO troops, Gen Stanley McChrystal, was on This Morning today saying something similar. He reckoned that 9/11 was aimed at creating a political and then military over-reaction by the west that would fuel the extremists rise. In his opinion we fell into that trap and are about to do the same without learning any lessons. Given ISIS seems to be supported by:-
(i) local Sunni Muslims - inclined Disgruntled Iraqi Sunni Muslims with regards to minority Shia muslims now having power in Iraq
(ii) Saudi Arabi Wahhabi Sunni Muslims
what do you recommend we do after putting Troops on the ground - then assume attack Raqqa which then falls after a blood bath or maybe it turns into a 'Stalingrad for them.
ISIS will then fight a guerrilla war supported by Saudi Arabia and local Sunni population.
Do we then build military bases and compounds and wait to be attacked - exactly the same as happened in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Hope you have signed up the infantry for the attack on Raqqa and then the inevitable guerrilla war. | | | |
