Venezuela - a reality checks 23:13 - May 21 with 15602 viewsjackrabbit

I don't know if you've been keeping an eye on Venezuela? It is a socialist regime much lauded by Mr Corbyn as an example of what we should aspire to. Well yes, if you fancy hyperinflation, a worthless currency and empty shelves in shops and supermarkets - how do fancy queuing for hours to buy toilet rolls? In short, this socialist paradise is a modern day catastrophe.

Venezuela is yet another example of the folly that is socialism. The thing is, it's nothing new. We were used to hearing these stories in the latter half of last century, when half of Europe was living the 'Socialist Dream' under the Soviet boot heel. The only thing that changes is that yet another starry-eyed generation of young people have to see for themselves and suffer the disillusion that comes from experience. TheVenezuelan experience will never be repeated in Britain because for all its faults the British electorate will never vote into power a pair of Trotskyite zealots like Corbyn and McDonnell. Here's a flavour:

"Many Venezuelans have already left the country, including Francisco Flores.....
The NHS therapist, who now lives in London, says the regime is based on a principle of keeping everyone “equal but poor”.

This way, the state becomes a nanny and everyone loses the power to do anything because they are so dependent on it.

Venezuela is now suffering from the effects of a deep recession and hyperinflation as the government prints money to try to plug a gap between revenues and spending that is on course to hit 25pc of gross domestic product (GDP) next year."

Pure Corbynism.

"So you admit to being anti semantic then? Just as I thought."

No you didn't

Nevermind chaps, I'm sorry to suggest otherwise.

Everyone is the same, there's no differences we're all equal absolutely no differences in belief systems, biological differences or culture.

Ignorance is bliss

To be fair, continuing to read and then quote a post which calls you anti semantic as though it said you were anti Semitic would be truly genius if only it was deliberate !

Right this is my last post on the subject.

This is what I said:

'Muslims tend to be poorer than Jews and therefore require attention'

The operative word there is "tend"

I'm not going to say anymore than that it's boring. It's not exactly rocket science to see what I'm getting at Palestinians are the underdog at present and require more attention, the State of Israel is powerful and has the power AIPAC lobby in America.

Now on the last point are you really going to suggest that doesn't exist? Really?

So Muslims tend to be poorer than Jews based upon Palestinians - Israel?

Are all Palestinians Muslim? Are all Israelis Jews?

Aye problem is the Guiness portrayal is far closer to the character as written. Moody's character was softened into a kindly old rogue for the purposes of a family musical.

Well, if anything the Guiness portrayal was pretty vile because Lean had already been warned it was offensive - so went OTT with it.

The story itself was a good story. The problem was the vile anti-semitism behind the Fagin character. It was pretty brave for Moody to take that role; I'd say his excellent performance was a good rebuttal to the anti-semitism.

It's an offensive character though. It was written that way and Fagin's Judaism is central to that. More often than not Dickens refers to Fagin as "the Jew" and lays the anti Semitic tropes on with a trowel.

This thread has clearly been derailed by the usual suspects.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Indeed it is - and I suspect Moody took on the role because of that.

As in a big "f*** you, the character was engaging without the anti-semitic sh*t".

Dickens was a product of his times where rampant anti-semitism was the norm. Thankfully things have evolved somewhat since then. As Moody showed, the anti-semitism wasn't needed to produce a compelling performance or story.

Should the book be banned now as a consequence, eh... if Enid Blyton books were being removed than so should that for consistency purposes. I don't see that books should be censored in those cases - they are fictional characters after all. Now if the book was purporting to be a real event, real characters, this is what evil Jews do as FACT then yeah ban them ASAP.

Really wish my wife was excellent at making money.

She's not bad with money - not into handbags and shoes so manages money fairly well but a sample size of one is a bit small for a generalisation...

Indeed, which was probably deliberate. Maybe even a nod and a wink to the Fagin character.

The child catcher didn't exist in the original story by Ian Fleming, not sure when it was introduced.

I'm not an advocate of banning books. I grew up reading Enid Blyton but if I had kids (I don't) I'd have a hard time deciding whether to expose them to her books and some of Dickens. At the very least they'd need an explanation of context.

Apart from the girls being a bit wet, what's wrong with Blyton?

Well, yeah. And they'd have to be old enough to understand that context.

Overt racial stereotyping (golliwogs for a start and most of the criminals were foreign types). And the gender stereotypes went way past the girls being a "bit wet".

I don't know.

What could possibly be wrong with little black doll Sambo, hated by the children due to his colour, having his face washed pink by the rain only to then be loved by all?

I grew up reading noddy and the famous five/secret seven etc and I'm not a horrific racist. This one noddy book the golliwogs lure noddy into the woods at night, stripped him naked, stole his car and left him there presumably to die until he got rescued by big ears. It was absolutely horrific and terrifying but I never ever once associated golliwogs with black people in the real world.
