I never went to this game, but suspect that most Swans fans' abiding memory will be that there was fighting between the rival supporters, and that one fan - called, I think, Robbie Matthews - died about a week later, at home in Swansea, possibly as a result of being badly beaten up by Millwall fans. Grim.

Moved to South London in 1981 and traveled to most away matches during that period.

I was working in the Old Kent Road at the time and this fixture was a real time bomb.

I decided to go to this and go in the home end...the streets around the Old Den was patrolled by large mobs looking for it.

Got in the ground and was in the section behind the goal which was next to the away end. The Old Den was terraced and open three quarters where you could walk around the home end.

I remember about 10 minutes in there was a massive surge down the Millwall terrace at the other end of the ground. Around 100 Swansea attacked that terrace from the exit at the top and caught Millwall cold. Then there was massive surge up the terrace when the Swansea fans got split. Around 70 got chased after a brawl back out the exit but 30 got down to the front of the terrace after brawl and climbed the fence and got on the pitch. There was two i remembered , a ginger head lad with long hair and a skinhead with a union jack t-shirt on who climbed into the away end. The rest of the game was just missiles flying back and for and got pretty nasty after the match. I filtered away thinking bloody hell what was those 100 thinking.

I was on my way there from my house in Dulwich and had a bump in Peckham, and was a bit late anyway, so after sorting it out never got there - thank f**k. Actually went back home and the GF at the time decided to do something nice to cheer me up. Sometimes I pretend I was at the game to commiserate with those that were, whilst reminiscing about what I was really doing. God sides with the angels...

I was there. Remember hearing "jack army" from the top of the cold blow lane end and thinking wtf. Thousands seemed to converge on that area (there were no barriers seperating 3/4 of the ground).

A group of swansea fans were chased down to the bottom and somehow scrambled over the fence.

Poll: Would you like Rodgers back as the new manager ?

Yep. 2 pop and crisps buses and the queens bus turned up on their end. Remember stacko walking around on his own after the main trouble had died down. Opening day of the season.

After game police told us to get under the roof of the away end- barrage of bricks and bottles was thrown from outside a few minutes later.

fecking mental. Too much went on to write about.

They were out of control that season. Smashed up Bristol city coaches - we saw them in Heston services coming back from Cambridge, smashed up Bristol pub in the away game and a few people had heard a rumour that they were coming to the vetch. As it happened the Luton FA cup riot happened before they were due here so there were more police with cameras than away fans that game.

Jesus wept! Not true!

Edit: Just realised how old is this thread?

I will say though, that up until last Saturday Millwall had sold just over 400 tickets. They are now bringing 1200. Bristol City last week? They've sold almost 800 since then, which tells us the type of fans who are travelling tomorrow.

Those were truly the dark days. ITV got in on the act courtesy of numerous press headlines of the era and made this documentary shortly after Millwall ran riot at Luton. 0:52s in gets a bit surreal with the Cockney Rejects bassist Vince o' Riordan making an appearance "It's a way of life innit".

Watched in disbelief from the other end. Mental. Spread all along the length of the ground until they reached the relative safety of the away end. “At least we had a go like” was overheard.

Whenever I talk to older Millwall fans and tell them I’m Swansea, they always bring it up. “The only mob to take fakkin’ liberties at The Den” is usually the jist of the conversation.

I remember Robert Matthews. I’m sure it was quite a few weeks after that game. If my memory serves me well it was after the Fulham away game (lost 5 nil - Gordon Davies scoring a few). I say that becuase I’m pretty sure he was on the bus I was on. We got bricked windows and traveled back to Swansea in the freezing cold. But, it was a long time ago so may have things a bit wrong with games/dates etc.
