Really? Article measures GDP only, which is only one factor...

Those wanting to cherry pick this to sneer at those who voted Brexit might like to reflect upon how economies within the EU are performing at the moment. Maybe they voted to leave too?

It's GDP. Size of the economy. It compares the UK with the rest of the world and we have fallen compared to other countries since June 23rd. No cherry picking, just a cold hard fact.

I should add that it has been curiously overlooked by our most read 'newspapers, the mail, the sun etc who are the real cherry pickers, using anything remotely positive to declare 'Brexit: The rise of Britain' (the daily mail's own words).

At some point people are going to have to admit some harsh realities.

So if you only want to look at GDP then, how did EU nations perform in comparison? Just so we can have a reference point as to how EU as a whole has faired...

A lot of denial on here I see. It doesn't matter what questions you want to ask about other countries - the fact that remains that two countries (France and India) have overtaken the British economy in size since June 23rd. Remember, brexit campaigners were using the line 'brexit won't affect the 5th largest economy'. That's not sounding so good now is it? After article 50 when growth falls again, India etc will rapidly extend the gap.

Denial doesn't help anything. Shouting 'project fear' is bullsh*t in itself. What the UK needs is honesty. Yes, brexit hurts us economically. You can't leave the larhest market in the world and expect it not to. It's just (supposedly) common sense, like 99% of economists said. WhT matters now is how badly it hits the economy...i.e. How 'soft' we make any brexit.

You're thinking very short term Deano. Once we're out we can trade freely with the entire planet, including the EU. There was never any doubt that it would hurt in the short term because any period of uncertainty has that effect, but we will be better off when we come out the other side. Plus the way things are going the EU might be decimated in the near future, people don't want or need it.

GDP means nothing, it's the quality of life that matters.Leads of countries with lower GDP who have a better quality if life.
Sorry if that upsets the remoaners who got a hard on when they saw the headline.

GDP is down due to sterling dropping after the remoaners talked the country down
with project fear and the Bo E needlessly dropping interest rates.

With respect, you've written a few things which are quite misguided there. For one, a lot of leave campaigners denied altogether that it would hurt us economically at all even in the short term. Many still are denying it. Our countries most read newspapers by far are completely spinning the facts so that our public are brainwashed into hearing what they want to hear - that brexit is going just great (just read bluey's posts - typical deluded DM reader type comments).

We aren't talking short term. There is no such things as short term in this case. The reality of the world is that all countries are competing against each other and many (like India) are now rapidly overtaking us. As part of the largest trading block in the world we had that strength which we won't now have as a smaller country outside it. New trade deals take years to even negotiate...5 years or longer to implement. We have to be out of the EU within 2. We all know that outside of the EU we will get a worse deal with them than we had as a member (common sense reasons like 27 countries having to agree on our deal, the EU not wanting to weaken itself etc by tempting others to leave) and so that is why economists know that British growth will slow and in comparison to the rest of the world we will weaken. The smart option would be a very soft brexit which basically amounts to brexit only in name (it will still have been a stupid move because of the sheer cost of it and we will still have a worse deal than we had previously). Any hard brexit...well, 10 years from now and we will still be picking up the pieces, recovering from years of economic slowdown and a lack of trade deals in the absence of our currently good deal as part of the EU.

And regarding the supposed collpase of the EU. It's all such a load of bullsh*t...yes brexit has damaged the EU as well as having damaged us. However, the GDP of the EU, even if you take us out of the equation completely is still massive and up there with the USA. 27 countries will not simply stop trading closely with each other. There may be reform but that is all it will be. It's very telling that our leading brexit campaigners like David Davis etc are now backtracking massively with talks of payments for single market access. They are waking up to the reality of 1) How much our businesses need that very close market access 2) how much our economy depends on it.

The pound fell on June 24th and again when Theresa May dared to mention a hard brexit. Nothing at all to do with bank interest rates ...the graphs are there for all to see. Brexiters need to stop this nonsense as it doesn't help anyone. Similarly if it were possible to talk an economy down then it would be possible to talk an economy up. You know..why didn't the world just pretend the 2008 recession wasn't happening and talk its way out of it. Stupid isn't it? The value of the pound is directly linked to business/investor confidence. Those are the people who put their money where their mouth is. Unsurprisingly foreign investors want to invest in a UK which is part of the European market. Take Japan for example...they explicitly said that they see the Uk as a gateway to Europe and that was their reason for investing here. Economists don't just pluck figures out of thin air.

I think you need to stop reading your daily mail, Sun or Express and actually read up independently about the economy because you don't seem very clued up.

The EU is the largest single marketplace in the world. It's GDP is huge. Even without the UK it is huge.

Our government had to 'give assurances' to certain companies which you are probably referring to just for them to continue business/investment as usual in this country. Think about that...just for them to stay. Those assurances are very likely to have been about a soft brexit which is where we are headin (a very costly soft brexit). All neighbourimg EU capital cities have teams set up to steal business from the UK and they are advertising actively as we speak (you can see them even on facebook adverts). Dublin has reported a large rise in relocation requests and some of our banks are already planning movement of their functions to EU cities. You wom't find much of this in your daily mail with their ridiculously spun headlines but again, it is there for all to see.

Brexit is a disaster for uk economy and jobs.

Built on lies that deceived the voters.

In reality it was all about the Tory leadership of course. Nobody sensible ever thought Brexit would be good for Uk jobs. Not even that utter buffoon Boris.

You have been duped. Sold a pup.
Fair play to the canny Scots who had their own mind and voted for whats best for Scotland.

"GDP is down due to sterling dropping after the remoaners talked the country down "

a prime example of post truth posting.

Sterling shot up after 10pm on 23 June, when Farage "conceded". It then fell like a stone on the Sunderland result and kept falling as the leave results came in. Not surprisingly, nigels city mates made a, killing.

Whenever the Tories talk of hard brexit, the pound falls,
When they talk about remaining in the single market it rises.

This is because the world capital markets are expressing an opinion on whether they think the UK is a,good place to invest.

But it's all the fault of remoaners talking the country down ffs
