If Swansea City goes down, how much will it be worth? 08:24 - Jan 8 with 2137 viewsMyFinalHeaven

In May 2015 Randy Lerner confirmed that he was in the process of selling Aston Villa and valued the club at “somewhere in the £150m to £200m” region.

Fast forward one year and Aston Villa are relegated. Lerner sells his 100% stake of the club to Chinese businessman Tony Xia. He is only able to get £60m. This is a club that, mind you, 1) had never been relegated from the Premier League before 2) owns it stadium, the 42,682 capacity Villa Park 3) is a historically very successful club, having won the 4th most league titles in English football with 7, won the European Cup in 1982, and have won the FA Cup 7 times and the League Cup 5 times 4) are located in a metropolitan area that is the second most populous in the UK and 5) possess a stellar academy that in recent decades have produced the likes of Gareth Barry, Daniel Sturridge, Marc Albrighton, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Gary Cahill, and Steven Davis, amongst others.

As we all know, the Americans purchased a majority stake in the club last summer in a deal that valued the club at £110m. In the very likely scenario that we get relegated, how much will we be worth then? As we saw with Aston Villa, it is IMPOSSIBLE to overstate just how much relegation from the Premier League decreases the value of a club. If a team like Villa, even with all of its assets, its history, its support, and other fortes only went for £60m, then how much would we be worth after relegation? How much will someone want to pay for a small club with a small fanbase that neither owns its own stadium nor possesses a decent array of young players it can build upon, having instead a squad deluged with has beens, scrubs not even good enough for the Championship, and old timers on long and lucrative contracts? £35m? £30m?

I fear that Levien and Kaplan are trying to figure this out right now. There's every chance that they will accept that they failed and try and cut their losses as soon as we get relegated, as did their fellow countryman Lerner.

There is no point in worrying about it mate. They will do whatever they will do. The only thing you can be sure about is that it will be what is best for them, not the club.

This is why those scummy imposters that took all the money, with no thought of care and protection of our -not their- club, should be reviled and vilified no matter how it all pans out in the end.

We don't know what these will do or who they will sell to. Our local 'fans' who 'saved' us have put us back in exactly the same position in terms of risk and lack of control, at enormous personal gain for themselves. Should be spat at wherever they go.

Part of the value could be down to the amount of dept Villa had, about £100M. They lost over £50M in the season before they went down and about £25M in the relegation season.

Birminham City might give you an idea as they were taken over last year, although they own their ground. Income would drop substantially - parachute payments will help if course, but without them turnover would be of the order £10-15 m per year, so it's inevitable our value would plummet.

It's obviously not in our owners' interests for us to be relegated. If we are it's also vital that our debts are as low as possible, so don't expect us to splash the cash this month.

Villa didn't actually have that much debt for the latest financial year of their relegation. It was £30m, which isn't much more than what we have now.

championship clubs don't cost much. lately 2x European Cup winners Nottingham Forest was valued at £40m while Charlton sold for a paltry £14m back in 2014.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/dec/28/charlton-buy-out-roland-duchate

both of these clubs own their stadium.

this club is a total mess and will be an even bigger one once we go down. we literally have no redeeming qualities right now. it might be attractive to potential buyers if it had a decent academy that consistently produced first squad regulars and stars, say one like Southampton or West Ham, but our academy is one that for the last 20+ years only has ben davies and joe allen to show for it. then there's the issue of the dross that's employed by this club, and I'm not only talking about the squad. the recruitment team and the media, PR, and commercial departments are an absolute JOKE. whoever buys this club has their work cut out for them not just on the pitch--all the aforementioned departments are long overdue for a complete reform and revamp and a dishing out of many p45s

if i was interested in investing in football i wouldn't touch this team with a 10 yard pole. like i said--there could be a chance we could be rescued and bought by a group of guys that actually know something about football and care about winning, but as it stands, i can't see anyone wanting to buy us as there's not a single thing we do right or a single thing we possess that is actually valuable. we lack a good squad, have the poorest scouts around, don't own the stadium, have an academy that we have pumped millions in but has yet to give us any sort of quality, and have a commercial and PR personnel that is the laughing stock of football

"It's obviously not in our owners' interests for us to be relegated."

It's also not in their interest to pour any more money into what they probably already see as a failed investment.

When it comes to rapidly depreciating assets, people don't invest; they divest. We have seen this happen many times in football with greedy, unscrupulous owners such as ours. Last year around this same time in January when Villa were all but destined for relegation, Lerner didn't sign a single soul during the window. He didn't even get a guy in on loan.

Come on you Swans.

Going to play Devil's advocate here.

If we do go down (and we're nowhere near mathematically guaranteed yet) with the sale valuation around £15 to £40 million, also assuming the Merrycans want to cut their losses...

Would you accept Jenkins, Morgan, Dineen, Van Z etc etc buying the club back?
Or is all trust in them totally destroyed?

Personally I don't want to see any of the sellouts or any that knew about it and kept quiet anywhere near the club, no matter what the circumstances.
Sure we could find another buyer at the right price.

If you wake up breathing, thats a good start to your day and you'll make many thousands of people envious.

Hopefully, the Trust will buy the club for a quid when the time is right. then it really will be owned by the fans. Even if that means we play in league 1 or 2.

Honestly, if these American owners are really serious about keeping us up, then they would have signed a player or two by now.

You'd think with the position we're in and with what has happened that we would have been signing players the minute the window opened. Instead, it's the 8th now and still there is not even talk of the finalization of a transfer on the horizon, much less a fvcking signing.

Meanwhile Middlesbrough, Hull, Everton, and Leicester have all already bought players, with the latter two spending £11m+ each on a single player. Everton have smashed the record for a League One player, buying Ademola Lookman for £11m and Leicester have spent £15m on the sublime Wilfred Ndidi. No doubt our efforts to get points against all 4 of these teams just got even harder.

i accept your point that we need t get players asap and those teams you mentioned already have, however PC has only been here less then a week. now if as everyone seems to demand hj loses his tenure as player picker extraordinaire, and we leave it to the manager to choose who he wants for the team then hes going to need more then a few days to figure it out. I know we don't have long but surely its better we get players we really need rather then just random picks based on what hes seen of our players on tv.
