It's based on a true story, Bony but heavily fictionalised.
For example, he didn't escpae by killing a head guard trying to rape him - Hayes has stated he never suffered any sexual violence. The guard was in fact killed by a paroled prisoner spotting him at a cafe and shooting him.
Hayes himself has criticised the film, especially for the way it depicts Turks.
Whenever I walk through the new port Talbot train station, i imagine his voice echoing around the place v for vendetta style.
Ever since my son was... never conceived, because I've never had consensual sex without money involved... I've always kind of looked at you as... a thing, that I could live next to... in accordance with state laws.

Thank you Barry Norman.
I much preferred the book to the film but it was a barbaric place and he was lucky to get out alive.
Of special interest to our friend Loyal of course is the famous, graphic *titwannk* scene in the prison when he gets a visit from his girlfriend . I m sure he's derived some form of pleasure from that one. But alas, that did not take place either in the book it was just put in the film.
Yes he did do a lot of damage to the Turkish tourist industry that was badly affected by that film for years after... no one wanted to go to Istanbul. I ve spent a couple of weeks there and the people are very nice not like in the movie.
It is only recently the Interpol warrant on his head has been lifted so he is now free to go there for a visit which he is hoping to do .

I been meaning to see an englishman in new york for a while, I should see this now.
A strange bit I noted. Most of the time when a knighted person from the UK passes on, the US media makes note of this. But strangely there's very little usage of "Sir John Hurt" in the media over here.
