Book recommendation for you all. 10:22 - Mar 10 with 1901 viewsLohengrin

A story of a life and apprenticeship as hard as it gets, of a man with the heart of a lion. You don't even have to be a fan of boxing to get something out of this it's just a tremendously inspiring tale of an epochal night in New York in 1937 and of how a rank underdog doesn't have to win to emerge victorious. Glorious stuff.

I gave them a good go, didn't I?

I noticed Tommy Farr fought Del Fontaine in one of his first pro fights at mannesmann hall Swansea.
Anyone know where was this situated?

Great book but hard to find cheap now.

I loved the story of when Tommy first left Wales and stayed in Slough which had a large Welsh population at the time. Walking from the railway station to the hotel he saw a Lloyds Bank and thought "My God ! They've even got a Welsh Bank here!"

It was sited in Plasmarl, mate. Built by and named after The British Mannesmann Tube Co., Landore. The venue’s last bill was in November, 1941, before it became a Home Guard depot. It's long demolished now.

I've probably played you this before, mate, but Tommy also gave proof that all Welshmen aren't necessarily born singers!

His boy gave it a bash too...

Joe Louis was ranked by many, then, and now, as the greatest heavyweight ever, he defended the title for 12 years.
