Gibraltar to be Spanish ? on 22:26 - Apr 2 by rock1n
We've only just started our "negotiations"
There's nothing to negotiate. Spain should be aware that come July/August we'll already have up to a million troops on the ground. Ok, they might be a bit pissed but you can't argue with numbers like that!
Spain has no leg to stand on, just like Argentina, if they had a valid case they would take it to the ICJ.
It's not as if Britain took it and and refused to give it back, Dutch troops actually took it in the first place I believe and at the end of the war of succession they had a choice on what they wanted returned of the land they lost during the war, they chose to keep Florida and Britain kept Gibraltar and Minorca, Britain subsequently lost Minorca back to Spain early in the Napoleonic War.
The fact is they signed over Gibraltar in a Treaty, remember as well that they took Gibraltar by conquest from the Moors only 250 years earlier, so Gibraltar has been a British possession for a longer period than it ever was Spanish.
Pot calling Kettle black comes to mind as well considering their 2 or 3 enclaves in Morocco.
Since the end of WW2 self determination has been the overriding factor to the end of colonialism.

As ePaul could no doubt tell you as we sit here there are people sat around a Devonport conference table dusting off protocols initially formulated in the Franco era for Marine deployment in the event of any Spanish move against The Rock. It's also more than likely that the aptly-named Trafalgar class subs will be keeping a watching brief on the ports of Cadiz and Cartagena as the initial stages of 'actions on' planning are put into effect.
I'd say the chances of this escalating are so remote as to be practically non-existent but for the boys and girls who do this for a living this will be about as live as an exercise gets.
Gib was a blistering run ashore, it was usually the last stop of a long deployment to let the boys blow off steam before coming home, if it was invaded, just let send a few ships out there let jack have a run ashore and the spaniards would be off sharpish. matelots love a beer and a bit of mischief
The hair and the beard have gone I am now conforming to society, tis a sad day
The b*stards are coming back though

"Watch out for the UK they will be up to their divide and conquer games!" Then they try to cause trouble over Gibraltar and Scotland. This is not a game, so British politicians are obliged to reassure the people of Gibraltar. Cue our own idiots claiming that the UK is sabre rattling.
F*cking wake up.
The EU will get fecking nowhere on Gibraltar, they know it, we know it (the USA put the Spanish back into their box on this one last night). The only purpose of the exercise is to stir up those idiots in the UK who don't know it.
It is dangerous how stupid these people (who call the shots in the EU) are...I opened with "laughable" but frankly I've stopped laughing.
In her 2,000 +word A50 letter, Mrs May doesn't mention Gibraltar at all.
Quite an important omission, as the UK only has 2 land borders with the EU, N Ireland and Gibraltar, (happy to be corrected if there are others).
So in order to clarify her omission, the EU said, From bbc:_ Friday's EU document said: "After the United Kingdom leaves the Union, no agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom may apply to the territory of Gibraltar without the agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom."
I think Eire will be involved in the discussion over the border with N Ireland, so only fair Spain are involved in agreeing border controls with Gibraltar.
Nobody at the EU has mentioned sovereignty being up for discussion, the EU statement refers to a trade and border control arrangement. Plenty of Tories seem happy to turn this into a sabre rattling contest. Mrs May would probably already have despatched an aircraft carrier for manoeuvres in the western med, if we had an operational one.
The UK voted to leave the EU and a key reason for many was control of our borders.
If we want to control our border with the EU, then Spain has every right to control its border with the UK, that is why the EU say they must have a say in any deal that includes Gibraltar.
Gibraltar can stay British, nobody in the EU is saying otherwise, equally without an agreement, Spain is at liberty to close their border with Gibraltar.
The people of Gibraltar knew all this and voted 96% to remain, after the leave vote the PM of Gibraltar asked May for the UK to retain single market membership. She ignored his request.
Project fear or not, nobody can say this wasn't forewarned,.

so Theresa May is happy for Spain to just close the border then?
Again, there is a reason Gibraltar voted 96% remain.
Franco closed the border for 16 years with no problems for the people there, its not all hunky dory now, Spain plays about with border crossing all the time.

English Tory voters losing the plot..........lol........seen it said that one of them seems to be suggesting supporting Catalan independence as revenge for Spain trying the get Gibraltar, how those Tories can then try and deny Scottish independence on the back of supporting the Catalans would be a mystery. I notice they are even bringing the Welsh into to it saying the Welsh and Catalans were trading a thousand years ago, going down that route and they will not be able to defend Welsh independence either.........lol
