Are there any successful writers who write about stuff they never lived?

Genuine question, I've only just got into this lark

On the Road is a classic. Big Sur is also good, but I if you love Kerouac, you would also really like anything by Charles Bukowski.

That's a thought-provoking question. To do so successfully would be testament to their research / imagination / observational skills as well as their writing prowess.

Yeah its mostly how things are I've found. A majority of writers (specially the genre ones) that have a scooby about some of the bits they've been in. As an example do honestly think George RR Martin knows what a sword fight is like? Most things in popular fiction feel more going through the motions than accurately slotting you in.

Suppose for me (as a writer) I find it quite important to capture the way things feel as much as the visual imagery.

I second this, a million times. Bukowski is a genius. Both his books and his poems are out of this world.

Upthecity!

Ginsberg was the most horrible man I ever met. He was in Swansea for the Year of Literature and I had an invitation to have dinner with him. Should have had a takeaway.

Of course. He famously performed with Ginsberg at a full Albert Hall in the 60s. Not really my cup of tea though.

Why do you ask?

He wrote a poem about Amy.

That's my friend Amy by there,
and that's her old man with the hair.

Though it makes Amy blush,
the old fool thinks it's lush,
when it makes passers by stop and stare.

Poor Amy she says with a groan,
Its defied all attempts with a comb.
Both my Mother and me, we've been here since three,
but he's still like a wild mountain roan.

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.
