The most predictable announcement this year.

The Westminster government, the assembly and the labour party couldn't give a rat's ar$e about any part of Wales outside the Cardiff bubble, and worse things will get now that the only body investing in the rest of Wales is being kicked into touch.

Face it folks, we're second class citizens. Our labour representatives are making no pretence of representing us, safe in the knowledge that at the next election they will all be re-elected comfortably.

UK Government Treats Wales with Contempt

This week we've been treated to yet another example of how the UK government has absolute contempt for Wales and the Welsh people.

They announced a few days ago that HS2 is to start soon, the cost of which has risen to £104 billion. Then a few days later they announce that there's no money to complete rail electrification to Swansea.

When HS2 is completed £5 billion of that cost, which will benefit London and the South East firstly and the rest of England secondly and have virtually no benefit to Wales, will be allocated as 'Welsh non-identifiable expenditure'. Because it will be classed as a UK investment Wales will be assumed as having to pay our share of 5% based on population. This happens with every 'UK wide investment'. Wales gets saddled with 5% of the cost even though almost none of this 'UK wide investment' happens in Wales.

So remember this the next time you read in the biased Tory run UK press that Wales couldn't be independent because of the huge gap in revenue and expenditure. What you are reading is propoganda. You are being manipulated into believing that Wales and the Welsh people are not capable of governing themselves.

If Wales was NOT saddled with the cost of having to help England build its infrastructure the gap between revenue and expenditure would all of a sudden shrink remarkably.

Think about it.
***********************************************************

The Welsh assembly government is exhibit A in the "Wales cannot govern itself" argument. Unless we begin to attract strong political characters to the Senydd it will continue to be a talking shop that has no end product.

The scots parliament has produced a string of strong, politically capable, nationally recognised talent from across the spectrum. Salmond and sturgeon have changed the political landscape of this country. Davison has been touted as a potential PM. What do we have? Leanne f&@king Wood. If you showed people in Wales a picture of Carwyn Jones and said who is this, most would say Derek the weatherman. A ridiculous situation for someone who has been first minister of a country for what feels like thirty years (Carwyn, not Derek I mean) not to be recognised in his own country.

We deserve this for having such a pathetically weak and virtually non existent "Parliament" who aren't standing up for Wales and doesn't speak for Wales.

The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Before the election, former Gower MP Byron Davies said that the investment would definitely be happening and in effect told all those concerned to sit down and shut up. Thank god the deceitful waste of space lost his seat.

The financial case for electrification has always been overstated. I am not even sure overhead electric lines are that reliable. I live in a region which already has overhead electric lines from London to Norwich. You should see the number of delays to trains caused by trouble to "overhead lines". Usually the result of power failures, lightening strikes, high winds causing trees to bring down power lines and trains actually bringing down the overhead lines usually for a mile or so until the trains grinds to a stop. It usually closes the line until the following day.

I think by far the biggest benefit is the new trains which will replace the 40 year old current inter city fleet. I have been travelling from Ipswich to Swansea for about 10 years and most of the major delays have been between Ipswich and London. The only delays on the London to Swansea line use to be getting through Reading which have been overcome with the extra platforms and new viaduct at Reading where the mainline trains now travel over the local lines. The only delays at present are getting into and out of Cardiff station which is clogged up with commuter trains.

Network Rail would be better off investing in the track and signalling around Cardiff and between Cardiff and Swansea.

Or maybe if he was still an MP he would've had more of a say against them scrapping it.

Another hammer blow to Swansea and the West. Investors will now think twice about any proposed investment. Can you imagine this happening in Scotland, no way, they would be too afraid of the backlash. The puppets at the weak WAG will accept anything as long as Cardiff is not affected. Also notice how they kept us dangling until the last day of Parliament before summer recess to make the announcement. Still no decision on the Tidal Lagoon, is that going to be abandoned as well?

Look at this. It makes my blood boil. For years people in Swansea have been asking the WAG to re-open Cockett Station and Landore Station.

Cardiff could do with a parkway station to be honest. If we keep comparing everything in Swansea to what is going on in the capital then we will be disappointed always. That 15 to 20 year gap is growing I'm afraid.

Is this decision a kick in the teeth? Yes. But, it's more symbolic than anything. For the small amount of time it would shed off the journey between Swansea and Cardiff (4 minutes I think), it may not be worth the outlay. However, the biggest impact is that it reinforces the message that Wales stops at Cardiff.

However, this announcement is peanuts compared to the damage inflicted on us by Welsh Labour -

- Closing the BBC in Swansea
- Closing our tax office
- Reneging on their promise to build a 2nd marina
- Spending more on the Millenium Centre (£47m) than our city centre regeneration (£20m) plans
- Giving them over double the budget (£500m) for their city deal (ours is roughly £125m)
- Giving them the new MTC despite the fact they have one 20 miles away
- Giving their university double the amount of funding to attract more students
- Pitching for Channel 4 to open up in Cardiff
- The continuous favourable rates they offer to companies to open in Cardiff in developments like Callaghan Sq etc
- The fact they found money to regenerate Penarth Pier and not Mumbles (to name only a few of the issues we've had over the past 20 years of wanton neglect).

These are the things that are damaging Swansea. The train is symbolic, look closer to home to where our problems are.

My worry is that ultimately we will end up having to change at Cardiff for journeys to the West.
Initially the plan is that the bi-mode trains come to Swansea. Seems fine. This will be the first in a number of small changes and degradations of service. Ultimately, they will find a reason not to run them to Swansea, and we will end up on an Arriva trains two coach job.
Drip, drip drip, they will screw us over slowly but surely.
Menawhile millions in EU funding gets spent on new paving stones, half-baked IT training schemes, remodelling the area round Swansea station multiple times, worm farms, failed tin can factories............. Scandalous mismanagement by those who purport to govern us.

-Tax office isn't devolved.
-Channel 4 identified Cardiff as a possible destination, we would be stupid not to welcome that.
-Business rates are influenced by local authorities, too.
-The reason Mumbles hasn't been developed has a lot more to do with the residents of Mumbles and the community council/trade associations than anything else.

Thought you'd pop up. Hilarious that you're outraged over a 4 minute delay but not the fact that your precious Welsh Labour spend double on a building in Cardiff than our entire city centre regeneration.

- You honestly think the WAG had no say on where a building would be located in its country?
- No, the WAG put forward Cardiff. Not Swansea, just Cardiff. Just like they closed our BBC.
- Every business that opens in Cardiff is always done 'with financial assistance from WAG', funny how we never get that. Is that England's fault as well?
- What a load of tosh. That's like the argument that the reason people are poor is because they haven't worked as hard. Everyone has been begging for the pier to be regenerated, we put forward a case and it was rejected by WAG who favoured one in Penarth. Funny that eh? Or was that England's fault as well?

You're right though, that 4 minute delay is really the big problem here.

My point exactly. One of the slowest parts of the route is through the Severn Tunnel. If that is the sum total of our ambitions there is little point in 15 miles or so electrified rail in Cardiff Central. At least it gets us off the bottom, and above Albania and Moldova, in a league in relation to kilometres of electrified rail.
My view is it should be Swansea right down to the Pembrokeshire ferries with associated track additions and improvements. We might even have had a case for EU money for that by it is way out of the window now.
As an aside I see Ken 'Cardiff' Skates is demanding from Cental Government that the money saved on Swansea be used for infrastructure improvements in Wales. I can guess where that would go if he got his grubby hands on it.

Speaking to the guard on the London-Swansea train, he reckons the new part electric/diesel trains aren't going to be faster than the current ones. The track is limited to 125mph, so the electric section will get faster acceleration/decelleration, but when it switches to diesel, after Cardiff, the diesel power will only get up to 110mph so that section beyond Cardiff will be slower.

Cardiff Swansea section has a 90mph speed limit on it anyway so 110mph is more than good enough. As only the line from Swindon to London is currently electrified the train will have to revert from Electricity to Diesel so with a Max speed of 110mph will be slower.

The point I would make is that the Cardiff to Swansea line, and as far as the ferry ports, should be improved. The rail capacity Cardiff to Swansea should be doubled to four track. This would allow local trains and high speed to run in tandem.
If we are to accept that the 90mph is all we are going to get then I would suggest Cardiff is in the same boat. There will be no 125mph journies between Bristol and Cardiff. It would not surprise me if that stretch is a even lower than Cardiff to Swansea.
Wales will continue to be a transport infrastructure wasteland regardless.

Nothing to do with Welsh Govt.

For Welsh Govt to fund it would mean cuts elsewhere in Wales.
