IS VJ MALLYA BUYING SWANSEA CITY FC?

India media are running a rumour that VJ Mallya, the disgraced former chairman of United Spirits, wants to buy a Premier League football team, specifically Swansea City, for about £110m.

The team, which narrowly avoided relegation last season, would add to his portfolio of sporting interests, including the Force India Formula 1 team (which he is said to be in the process of renaming the better to attract sponsors) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore Indian Premier League cricket franchise.

Swansea was taken over by an American consortium just over a year ago. Neither side has commented on the rumours.

Mallya, who has been declared a “wilful defaulter” by Indian courts as well as being found in contempt of the Supreme Court for failing to make a full disclosure of his assets, is contesting extradition from Britain to India after fleeing to the UK in March 2016.

At the centre of the case is some £1.1bn in debts and interest Indian banks claim Mallya owes them. He has always contested this sum and maintains that he wishes to agree a settlement.

Meanwhile, India’s legal authorities have now delivered to the Crown Prosecution Service details of the charges against Mallya. They include laundering some £150m through various shell companies in India, Ireland, the US, France and the Seychelles.

That money is alleged to have been part of a loan to Mallya’s now bankrupt Kingfisher Airlines from IDBI bank, formerly the Industrial Development Bank of India. It was said to have been used for purposes such as aircraft leasing and maintenance but, it is alleged, no confirming records have been found.

Mallya denies all the charges all charges against him and claims they are politically motivated. One of his arguments is that Indian jails are substandard compared with European institutions and thus, as he will be imprisoned to await trial immediately he sets foot in India, he will be caused undue suffering.

India’s government has told Britain that anyone extradited from the UK will be lodged in a jail with proper facilities but that nobody will be given preferential treatment. It claims that it has already instructed the Maharashtra regional government to upgrade Mumbai’s Arthur Road prison where Mallya will be held if he is extradited.

The full court hearing on the extradition warrant will be start on December 4. Meanwhile Mallya remains on bail in the UK.

Does India have a Bob Bradley equivalent? Be grate to see the Indian fan base rise if this deal happens.

Maybe they'll have the arse over how Taylor was treated

1: put a £50 price tag on Siggy
2: Sacked Bradley - probably offset by the fact they hired him
3:...........ummm..........

The Yanks are doing ok at the moment with their decision making apart from appointing Bradley of course. They did get rid of him at the right time though which was proved again a good decision. My only concern is I doubt they've spent any of the their own money and just what we've made from past dealings and hardly any of that. They're playing hardball over Gylffi and Llorente too now we hear so I really hope they don't flog our most valuable assets and then not replace them with the same quality of player.Thinking about it, it's a real possibility that might happen again but we live in hope.

3. Hired PC, or at least stayed out of the way and let it happen.
4. Spent 11 million on a defensive midfielder, something prior ownership wouldn't do even for a beloved Welsh former player.

Poll: Biggest signing so far in January? (just curious what Planet Swans thinks)

yeah you're right of course,

although you could argue that they didn't appoint Clement in the first place when they had the opportunity,

and I'd like to think that as Carroll was already on the radar and we were in trouble in January they would have been a bit more flexible with the chq book after making their mistakes in the summer

Jenkins must be given the credit for Clement.

The Americans have not taken the club forward.
They don't seem connected to the fans and their decision to charge the higher prices for Sampdoria is hugely disrespectful.

completely agree with you about the disconnect

Bizarre how probably the most successful part the americans have played so far is the transfer market

Personally I feel a lot more positive that over the last 6 months we are making progress and moving forward. Sampdoria tickets are overpriced but apart from that decisions have been excellent.

Decisions seem to have been "no brainers."

Keep Bradley- lose the TV money of around £100 million replacing it with £16( or £12?) million parachute payment.

Get a couple of players in, because the squad is so woefully thin and filled with dross or suffer the above.

Bringing in someone half tidy to run the Comm. Dept and demoting Dimwit. The tw@ who in 6 years of free World Wide publicity manages to bring in a local curry house and a funeral director as advertisers. That must have taken a lot of thought on the Merrycans part.

Get an unproven manager in as the cheapest option- or because no one half decent wanted the poisoned chalice. We can ignore Redknapp and the like here.
Risky strategy but it worked, otherwise see the first statement.
No using hindsight there saying PC was the best around- look he saved us we're still up. It was definitely a risky decision.
Saying that, the odds were against us when we hired the 3rd manager in a season. Not sure if we're the first to do it and stay up but we're definitely in a minority.
Maybe in Cloughies minority of 1, I'm not sure.

The Pl is a pretty unforgiving place to learn, as a player, a manager or really as a new owner.
Football clubs are on the whole, bottomless money pits.
Bad decision making by our Colonial cousins could get them into serious sh1te with their backers.
Because I for one am fairly sure they are the front of a multilayered shell corporation.

If you wake up breathing, thats a good start to your day and you'll make many thousands of people envious.

Is it possible that keeping Siggy and Llorente is paramount to the yanks off loading the club ? hence the serious hardball being played in the fees for Llorente and Siggy .

Make no mistake the yanks are here to make money and nothing else, i think we all know the main idea was to buy low and sell high and make a profit, as suggested elsewhere if they sold in the next few months they stand to make a lot of cash so i can see the logic in this story coming out at this time .

This type of thing is exactly why the trust was set up, why the likes of Jenkins ,dineen etc still get to walk around untouched by it all amazes me. The trust failed in its task due to too much conflict of interest and the previous owners shafted us big time, all in all having some dodgy Indian in charge instead of dodgy yanks or sneaky Huw is like death by drowning or death by burning.

The yanks have done the minimum required to keep the club ticking over, lets not pretend they are some kind of amazing owners they are just doing the basics and looking good because Jenkins and dineen were fooking incompetent most of the time.

Playing Devils advocate. What more could the Americans have done since taking over?

Employed PC
Allowed him to make some crucial signings in January and a couple of useful ones so far this summer.
Backed him in an attempt to keep Siggy & Llorente

Sampdoria are playing Man U soon in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, probably in front of a full house and I guess most supporters there won't be moaning about the price

re Sampdoria - the issue I have attempted to raise is that the Trust seem unable to influence the price where in the past they did. It is worrying...

I take your point.
TBH I didn't think £20 was bad, but there again I don't attend friendlies anyway.
