You won't get that, I've looked and looked and settled on 1.10 to the £, not going for a few weeks, but by then it could be down further. [Post edited 26 Jul 2017 17:18]

I always pay with cards, but you should avoid the bad ones. I have a Halifax Clarity card, which is one of the best. Lot of info here http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/

I also have a Clarity card, but I still like to take a few euro, handy if you popping along the promenade and fancy a beer or a snack.

Excellent - then you cannot fail! The only thing to be aware of (and I may be teaching you to suck eggs) is that if you use it to withdraw cash abroad, whilst you'll get a good rate, interest is charged from the day you make the withdrawal. So what I do is 1. withdraw as little as possible 2. pay with the card wherever possible 3. pay in euros (or whatever) if you're offered the choice of euros or sterling 4. only withdraw cash when I need it (not one big lump at the start of my holiday) 5. if I made any cash withdrawals, pay off the entire balance (not just the statement balance) as soon as I get home (there'll be some interest but it's normally minimal). Apologies if you already knew all that.

I always use the fee free halifax clarity card also. 5 minutes after withdrawing cash from the ATM I pay the credit card from my current account that way no interest is paid and you get the mastercard rate. People who use airport exchange booths get what they deserve. Mastercard rate is showing 1.1228 at present.Just make sure you choose without conversion and pay in local currency avoiding the Dynamic Currency Conversion which can cost you upto 10% of your cash. ttps://www.mastercard.us/en-us/consumers/get-support/convert-currency.html [Post edited 26 Jul 2017 19:42]

Euro Exchange Rate on 19:29 - Jul 26 with 1616 views | monmouth | It used to be cheaper to do a debit card withdrawal in that it was a fixed fee and the rate followed the market. Is that a rubbish way of doing it? I haven't needed many euros for years though, so don't care enough to think about it.

I wasn't sure if Halifax would be funny if you paid off a cash withdrawal immediately, especially if you made multiple withdrawals, so I just pay when I get home. I know they don't like you pre-loading your credit before you go - that's against their T&Cs apparently. Wouldn't want to tick them off - I like my Clarity card.

Watch yourself with the Halifax card. They used to be one of the worst for identity fraud and absolutely the worst for sorting it out. This is from their own internal stats that I was shown by an ex employee a few years ago. Things may have changed.

Euro Exchange Rate on 19:41 - Jul 26 with 1587 views | jacktar | I usually go for comparison on moneysupermarket.com. At the moment they are only showing best rates as 109 euros to the £. I have pre-paid Travelex and Fair Fx credit cards which I top up when the rates look reasonable. Always a bit of a gamble in the present climate though.
