Fed up of Virgin - looking to swap Broadband provider Talk Talk are offered a 17mb service for £20 per month (as opposeed to my current 100mb from Virgin) will it make any difference to the actual streaming etc and surfing ?

I just looked into this for a family member. If you are streaming 4K programs, youll need more than 17mb. She was going to switch to Plusnet, they were offering a 29.99 package, but when she rang her supplier (BT) they matched the Plusnet offer. So no switch, but anyway you might struggle with 17Mb depending what you streaming. Turns out Plusnet and BT are actually the same company behind the scenes!
I've used them for years. They've been fine, although they are obviously still shitheads that don't tell you about better deals etc. I have unlimited fibre currently running at about 36mbs, should be 50, all UK calls to mobile and landline, line rental, plus their rather crappy tv box for £32. Heard some horror stories about service availability from people in other locations but it's been fine for me. I've never really noticed any difference in streaming no matter how much the 'speed' has been upgraded.
Edit: I'm not a big user of higher tech stuff. Sport and yootube is probably the limit of my streaming. Certainly not 4K, whatever the **** that is.

As long as the 17Mb is stable, will be OK for HD, too slow for 4K though probably. I couldn't go back to that kind of speed these days, personally.
My virgin contract expired recently, I handed in my 30 day notice and got a call back within a week offering 200 Gamer broadband and phone line for £32 per month. Was paying £77 previously with the Tivo box.

Thanks but, no thanks. My life is complicated enough in SD. If I could I'd go back to black and white. If I want rich colours and exceptional detail, I'll go outside.

I've got a 4K TV, but only because they're the same price as 1080p sets these days.
Load of bollox to be fair.

Before you sign up, check on their site when they ask for your address. Depending how far you are from the exchange it will give you a "Download Speed Range" 0 - ??Mb This could be way below their advertised 17Mb
Also if you report a fault they will send out an engineer from a private firm. Then if the fault is deemed outside it's passed to Openreach.
This can take many many days!!

I will switch from Virgin media after the latest price increase regardless what they offer me to stay I have asked for my PAC code a few times but retentions have persuaded me to stay, but not this time it's about principle now not price. I have fibre optic I assume if I switch to Plusbet / BT they use the cable currently installed by Virgin. Any one know?

I use Virgin up here in Cimla, but I was having problems with glitchs in the internet so ran speed checks and was getting much less than 20mbs on download and even less on upload, they sent engineer out who changed router and told me the area up here is generaly poor anyway and I've been paying for super fast ffs. Phoned and complained and they dropped price and increased speed to 200mbs, it worked sort of for a little while but its back to bad again with similar download and upload speeds,

Virgin are hilarious if you complain to them via twitter.
I complained end of last week over the phone to them and said I'm cancelling my contract, but they said it had gone past the 14 day cool off period and said I'd be in breach of contract the cheeky bastards, I responded by saying that they are in breach and have been for a long time, their sending a senior techie out now on Monday. it won't make a blind bit of difference but at least they'll have to cancel my contract then if I want them to, if not lookout for me on Watchdog.

Spoke to Virgin yesterday about the intermittent drops in internet connection.
My customer notes show I've been complaining about this for at least 4 months. They apologised and gave me a £56 compensation credit, but also told me that the engineers cannot give a date when the issue in my area (SA10) will be resolved I've paid in advance for the phone line rental, but may still look at changing my services. Wife likes TIVO so won't drop TV

You have the legal right to cancel your broadband contract if you are not getting the internet speed that they guarantee.
They will give you a speed that they believe you will get when you sign up, normally less than what they advertise.....if that is not achieved, you then have the right to cancel.

There is a time limit on how long a fault has existed before they will cancel without charges.

Try the same test with the laptop on a cable mate. Disable the wireless card
Tried that last week it was slightly better, but at this time of night it should be stronger surely, unless all my neighbours are all watching porn on their PC's
