As an aside, I'm not knocking people who work there in any way, just think they need to look outside McDonalds, or to try to progress within the company if they want to earn more money. |
What about the people that genuinely enjoy working there, as a burger flipper, or whatever they are called?
I work in Civil Engineering and we have blokes who are more than happy to plod along at the bottom of the ladder, digging holes, fetching and carrying all day, in all weathers. Some of those, who despite not having any academic qualifications, could do well for themselves and probably reach middle management. But they don't bother because they don't want the responsibility and hassle that goes with it, they do their job, clock out at the end of the day and forget about things. Does that mean they should never want or ask for a pay rise? |  |

Of course not. I just think people are a bit entitled these days. Feel they are owed something in life.
I was a paperboy for the Evening Post many moons ago (20 years maybe). Think I got £12 a week plus tips (usually 20p here and there from the customers once a week). I used to walk miles. I never once thought ''hang on, I am working hard here, I want to be paid the same as that fireman risking his life that just whizzed past me''.
I knew my place in the work arena, knew it was a low paid job and knew that it was a means to an end. Nothing wrong with working in Mcdonalds at all, or any near minimum pay jobs. Someone has to do them. But that kind of work should not be subsidised or topped up just because they want more, it is what it is, its a bottom of the scale job.
If McDonalds non skilled labor workers get £10 an hour (a massive collective workforce) then other non skilled workers will want the same. The pressure put on small businesses would be massive. Then those firefighters etc will want to be paid more than McDonalds burger flippers, ambulance men will think ''im only getting paid a couple of quid more than a burger flipper now'' - the knock on effect will be awful for the economy and will essentially end up in not being a payrise at all as everything goes up in price to accommodate for it. I guess you had a bigger area to cover than me or were maybe older? Either way I just got on with the job and accepted it for what it was. I knew if I wanted a better job in the future then I would have to work for it, I certainly wouldn't expect to hold the EP to ransom to pay me skilled worker wages for what is essentially a monkeys job. | |

I had a bacon muffin from Penllergaer McDonald's this morning. It was horrible. It's ironic though that we constantly lecture aspiration and tell people to do what they can to make the best of themselves but when a group of people try to get a bit more cash for the job that they do we tell them to know their place and be thankful for what they've got. If McDonald's workers can get themselves £10 an hour then good luck to them. I earn significantly more than that (as I'm sure do many if not most in here) and my job brings far less pleasure to many more people. [Post edited 19 Aug 2017 21:48]

An Ambulance care assistant gets £17,000 a year...works out at about £8.50 an hour based on a 40 hour week. Thats a generous estimate too, I rounded the hourly rate up.
So it's not being not connected with it,its about realising the situation and seeing it as ridiculous. 21k a year for wiping tables down in McDonalds would be a travesty. Not far off our policemen and women that is it? [Post edited 19 Aug 2017 22:05]

No I'm not and that's nowhere near what I said.
The people you described in your previous post who could have quite easily progressed in your industry but have decided they are happy on the tools have 'accepted what's given to them'. That's their choice. They could have been promoted and ended up with a job they didn't enjoy nearly as much. All credit to them for choosing not to.
Where is becomes bonkers is the implication that those guys should be able to carry on 'plodding along at the bottom of the ladder' and getting paid as if they had reached middle management, even though they didn't want want the hassle and responsibility.
I'd like a pay rise too, I'd guess most would, but I'm not about to strike over it.
