So I've been parking my car at the rec car park whenever I go to university (I live near Bargoed so it is rather a bit of a commute). For the past two semesters I have paid for two permits at £44.00 each. When applying for the current semester, I found out that a permit would only cost me a whopping £200.00.
Speaking to the estate office, they explained that the rise in fee "covers the cost of the charges made to Swansea University by the local Council for this parking on the Recreation Ground". It's understandable if the fee was raised by something like £20.00, but over a 350% increase? That's baffling. Any thoughts on why the fee is significantly higher?

I work in the University- take it from me it's a huge money machine but about as efficient as the BBC in terms of its spending. They really know how to spend other people's money and it's a case of no expense spared- for the University. It's seems that Higher Education, once an altruistic pursuit, is now a self-indulgent money monster. I sympathise with you. |  |

Most Unis have run to Semesters (which are not the same as terms) for many years. We have 2 UG semesters (Sep-Feb, Feb-Jun) but three terms. Post grads get a third (Jun-Sep)! |  | | |

UWTSD Swansea (i.e. Swansea Met) have just introduced parking charges for October onwards for all of their on campus parking. It's looking like it'll cost circa £200 per year, both for staff and students.
What will we see in exchange for the money? Absolutely nothing. They sugar coat it with the promise of 'better parking', but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the parking as it is (all tarmac, plenty of spaces, security cameras).

There's a difference between 'Semester' and 'Term'...the dates are different.

Outside residents homes, who unfortunately don't qualify for residents parking, but there again they will take chance and park in the bay, because they know there's barely any wardens about. |  |

The recreation ground was bequeathed to the people of Swansea by Dame Adelina Patti, it was to be used as somewhere for them to enjoy recreational pursuits and the council cannot legally enforce you to pay for parking there. This has long been a bone of contention to the residents of Brynmill, and, having put the theory to the test the chap who tried to charge me for parking backed down when I mentioned about the legal covenant.

I have been told they are also looking to charge people to park on a Saturday too, when it is used by running and exercise groups, plus the occasional charity run in Singleton park.
I was told it would be £3. So, for example if you do the Parkrun on a Saturday - a great free activity, you now have to pay.
Councils used to be 'public servants', now they just see the public as a means to an end (often their own). |  |

Just the staff being shafted then. Maybe we should do one of these online petition things as that is what has swayed upper management. Our union will probably do feck all.
