£4m to be spent on Cardiff airport on 20:38 - Dec 30 by Catullus | 20 million loss this year? It's not sustainable and why should the whole pf Wales pay for an airport a large chunk of it doesn't use? |
What if the UK govt simply treated Welsh airports like they treat Scotlands airports...? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-41833833 Why should the interests of a regional English airport hinder the development of Wales national airport. ...? Think differently.

It’s very close to the main railway line. Much bigger brownfield site which could have longer runways so bigger aircraft in.

A lot of spare land around there, the circuit enjoys no sound restrictions as there's bugger all around there so plenty of opportunity to develop and its far enough away from Brizzle to be competitive but alas it doesn't have a CF postcode so is a non starter.

Which main railway line Bryn? The Swansea to Paddington line is miles away. Are you talking about the Barry line?

£4m to be spent on Cardiff airport on 21:09 - Oct 11 by Swanzay | The major problem with CWL is the extortionate landing fees they charge airlines, this literally is window dressing until that changes .... |
This is true. The duty fees per passenger are amongst the highest in Europe. Ryanair would love to open more routes from CWL but its not worth it. They suggest it goes to the WAG to reduce or abolish these fees....then we d really see that airport take off (pardon the pun). As it is everyone just goes to Bristol because Easy Jet and Ryanair can operate at a profit there and offer much more destinations and value as a result. Took loads of trips last year for under £30 there and back.

Let's hazard a guess at what will happen. CWL will continue to lose money. There will probably be some sort of Carbon Tax reason behind a non-reduction of landing fees. But it won't matter. The place will continued to be subsidised by the taxpayers everywhere else in Wales on the spurious grounds that Wales needs its own International airport, despite there being a far superior facility less than an hours drive away.

I didnt realise their fees were so high, we are amongst the poorest regions of the UK and have some of the highest charges.... I would imagine that because of the low number of flights and passengers and the need to retain certain functions, the costs per person are much higher hence the charges being higher, but surely with some imagination and engagement with the airlines they could work to a position where flights could be increased and duty decreased.

Well lets not forget its now owned by the Welsh Government who expect it to be turned around and make a profit in the near future. But again they are they are their own worse enemy, a lot of the these different fees could be reduced or abolished, what's the point of having high fees with hardly any planes taking off, its just daft. Great airport for me as its only a short drive away, but until the low cost carriers start offering the same level as Bristol then I have no choice but to use that one. Its a tricky situation, interestingly the ones leading the crusade on this is Plaid Cymru.

Thus far the WAG have proven to be largely incapable of running things that aren't expected to make a profit. I don't have much optimism.

Their track record aint great that's for sure. But they seem to have a good team appointed to run the airport with a projected 3 year turnaround. CWL has potential, about 10 years ago it was making consistent profits year on year. Then something happened, I don't know what, that turned it all to crap and its been losing money since.
