Official Swans Website Not in Welsh 14:57 - Oct 16 with 11509 viewswestwalesed

I know there are some on here who don't see the value in the Welsh language, but the official website can be translated into Mandarin, but not Welsh, which is an official language of the United Kingdom and needless to say spoken by many, many, people as a first language particularly in west Wales. I think this is an utter disgrace.

I e-mailed the Digital Media Manager over the weekend, and this was the reply I have received today:

"Hi Edward

Many thanks for your email.

We have a Mandarin button on the site purely for our sponsor LeTou. We are currently translating the swansdirect.com store into Welsh as well as Spanish but with the main website we are unlikely to translate this into any other language. As when I have analysed traffic and usage it really doesn’t warrant any other translations.

Thanks again for your email

Beccy Symmons"

Surely this can't be right??????

Honestly is it going to make anyone's life more difficult if they can't read it in Welsh?

We have better things to be spending time and resources on.

Yes, but that's not the point is it.

It would cost nothing (relatively) and be a recognition of the fact that we are a club based in Wales, Wales has two national languages, and that we are proud of the fact.

A foreign based fan can get the website in Mandarin but not in Welsh FFS.

Not all .

The language, like it or not, divides

Just look at this site and the contempt for those who cannot or do not want to speak Welsh. It ain't a crime ,really

Great if you do, but it's what you converse about that matters, not in what language in which you do so

So, language devides but it doesn’t matter which language you converse in... somewhat contradictory, don’t you think?

As has already been mentioned, regardless of whether you speak welsh or not, Swansea City is a welsh club, and as such should have it's website in welsh and english. It would cost peanuts but would be hugely appreciated

Language divides .

Of course it does

Witness the attitude from Welsh speakers towards monoglot Welsh people. On here !

It's impossible to discuss the Language in any way whatsoever as any questioning of it leads to abuse .The language doesn't need defending

I d rather we lose Welsh from every home if it meant a more prosperous ,vibrant country where the kids have the same chance in Baglan as they have in Buckinghamshire . The language gives us nothing apart from giving smug self satisfaction to a minority of the country whilst the majority have to put up with mind blowing bi lingual detritus .

We ve lost a generation of industry , we ve lost hundreds of thousands of jobs .We see little regeneration outside Cardiff yet the Language is a subject that supersedes many things

And why do you converse in English on this site.

Yes - like millions on an Academy that has failed to produce a player since Ben Davies ?

Or even dividends for our shareholders ?

Or maybe signing Spanish players every season who cant get in our first team ?

All far more important.

So because no welsh player has come through our academy in 5 years, lets put that time into translating the website into a useless language instead.

Very good!

Well it is the point, but incovenient for yourself.

It makes no difference to anyone, other than to those who get a sense of accomplishment that someone wasted time writing something in a language that served no purpose to anyone.

It costs TIME (money) to translate everything on the website every time new content is added, not to mention the inevitable edits once Dai Hambone emails in to correct every misplaced ff and ch

Are there people who prefer to use Welsh as their first language, yes.

Should they be able to access information about our club in their mother tongue in their own country? Yes.

And just how does that benefit anyone .

Language is a means of communication.

You couldn't go around Swansea speaking Welsh alone .

You speak English.

There are Welsh born people who prefer to use a variety of languages, such as Polish or Arabic, as their first language.

Why are they not able to access the site in their mother tongue?

Incredible

Note ...criticism of an abstract thing like language turns personal

My point proven

Quite why England is still hated beats me as without it Wales would starve .

That said. Successive Westminster governments should have seen industrial areas properly regenerated .. The north, north west ,north east, west mids left to fester whilst the south east prospers.

Welsh government has proven pitiful

What is discussed or bitched about in Welsh is done also in English

No silly, the fact that the club can't be arsed to spend 50p to get the site translated, it just shown a lack of awareness or indeed caring for some of its supporters.

Good luck finding someone to translate the entire website as well as all future content for 50p!

I know the average wage is pretty low at the moment but that takes the bisged!

He prefers England thats why he lives there.

He lives in 1968 as well when the language debate was on the news. In black and white, mind.

Of course the debate is over now and wales has the joy of being an officially bilingual nation. You know, like most nations on earth.

A million welsh speakers by by 2050 is the official target.

What a great time for the welsh language.
Still a place for English as well - how enlightened.

Beware of the Risen People

He’s English now, so of course he does.

He already feels like he doesn’t belong here, so any talk of Welsh language makes him feel even more insignificant.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.
