I thought that the Scottish plan had been legally challenged. That said, it may be in force and awaiting a decision as to whether it is repealed or not.
WAG say it will save 50 alcohol related deaths a year. How on earth can they say that and similarly how can anyone at this stage dispute it.
Maybe they are working on getting duty from alcohol to be paid to the devolved government. |
I can see both sides of the coin, alcohol can cause a lot of misery and suffering, however a lot of people enjoy a drink in moderation now and again and pushing the price up is going to punish them. It may also drive people who need alcohol but can't afford it to stealing.
I can't understand why the WAG are contemplating bringing this legislation at the moment when similar legislation which was introduced in Scotland is being challenged in the European Courts, it seems like a complete waste of time and money. Why not wait for the outcome of the ongoing case in Europe? | | | |

I was talking it down because increasing the price of alcohol will only affect the people that are not dependent on it, the ones that are dependent on it will just look for different methods to fund their illness. This is just a sticky plaster answer by the WA to a problem, where probably there is no answer.
If the Welsh Assembly are so concerned about alcohol addiction, they should give more support to those that are suffering from the illness, because, believe me there is very little help out there at the moment.
As for your suggestion to ban alcohol completely, that idea didn't work in the USA many years ago, so I see no reason why it would work here now, I'm afraid we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. | |

Alcohol dependency is an illness.
Alcohol invades EVERY part of the human body (apart from our earlobes)
EVERY "alcoholic" I have spent time with has stated that cheap offers in supermarkets and corner shops are the curse that blights their road to recovery, and a normal life.
There is help in every corner of South Wales for people who want it. There are AA meetings every single day of the year within a few miles of wherever you might live. Tens of millions of people attend these meetings every day of the year.
I work in that sector and a minimum price for alcohol is a MUST.
