Firstly, what got me thinking about the subject...

I caught the start of Andrew Marr yesterday and they (Marr, Polly Toynbee and Fraser Nelson) were going through the papers.
The subject of Toby Young and his internet history came up and Toynbee was going to town on him.
Nelson made coments to the effect of, it was all in the past and at least he is a doer, passionate about his brief and should be judged on what he does now (instead of what he tweeted 5yrs ago).
He then praised Young as a journalist who actually put his money where his mouth was and put his ideas into practice, making a real difference, which is more than Toynbee or himself ever did.
Toynbee comes back with "Oh yes, because he just wants to create a school for his kids".
Nelson retorts; "Yes, it's better than sending them private as some columnists I could mention". Ouch!

A quick bit of online research reveals that Toynbee sent 2 out of her 3 children to Private School.
More interesting detail re: Toynbee...

- She is from a super privileged background
- She herself went to Private School in her primary years
- She still managed to fail the 11+ and went to a state school
- She achieved only 1 'A' level
- Yet still went to Oxford University
- She then drops out (like Corbyn) to "work in a factory and write great fiction in her spare time, like Tolstoy"
- Before realising that the reality of working in a factory for long hours doesn't lend itself to such intellectual pursuits.

Is it just me or is this woman a f*cking imbecile.

...anyway, I digress.

Q1. What do the good posters of Planet Swans think about Private Education Vs State?

and

Q2. Why is it that people who call themselves left-wing (vote Labour, preach socialism and anti-privatisation) find privatisation to be such a good thing when it comes to their own offspring's education?

and

Q3. Why should anyone take these people seriously

Private education should be banned until state education is fully funded and fit for purpose.
Including university type bodies.

For the many, not the few.

I mean ....why would we want more Tory toff idiots like Boris.

Education should be free to all. However I would ask is it in the interests of the elite to have the masses properly inculcated?

And private education isn't just a Tory thing.

How many of you know what DP stands for?

Class War

Seen it with Degsy Hatton and chum close up.
It's not pleasant ,trust me

I d be rather looking at teachers who allow our kids to leave school bate,y literate and parents who send five year olds to school who are not toilet trained

We re backward in many ways .I recall many parents who went without holidays ,dining out or spending shed loads on the ale to send their kids to private school

I ve had private singing and music lessons ,my sister had elocution so suppose we re the enemy ,which is fair enough

Interesting link at the bottom there.

"Many free schools promise smaller class sizes and longer opening hours. A free school in Norwich, for example, is open six days a week, 51 weeks a year. This is what more state schools should be doing.".

It sounds to me that her main rationale for going private was because it was more convenient for her and the kid wasn't a consideration. That the kid then flourished is an added benefit.

I can see why people go private, but State schools can work. We're lucky in Wales as we have some of the best State schools in the UK as I understand it, especially Welsh speaking schools. Attainment is good and people get the chance to do well and go to top Universities.

But absolutely we've got to get the state schooling better. It's been an eye-opener living in the States for 6 months - the local school is streets ahead for facilities, class-sizes, attitude, etc.

Done both, benefits of both. But, will say, if I had children, and was financially able, I would definitely consider private education depending on the reputation on the schools locally.

What I don't like is that private education is seen as so worthy of hatred often by people who see nothing wrong with spunking their money away on periferal shyte they don't need.

Many families forsake much seen as essential by others to give their kids the very best chance in life and yes I sent both of ours to private tutors to bring them up to the highest standard possible to get them through exams . It was money well spent

As I say, many many forgo " luxuries" to pay for private education., you could add any private instruction into the argument .

My ol fella worked like feck to pay for private lessons and for holidays too when others didn't want to do that extra graft

It certainly is a divisive subject

Biggest question is why so many " poor" kids eschew education preferring to get " rich" quick by crime and why do we not have the learning culture Cinese and Indian kids have who don't see education as uncool

Well my lad went through state run schooling and despite severe hearing loss from birth obtained a degree, which has brought him a job of his dreams with the Home Office.
There's a great many other Children that have done fabulously well and better after being schooled at State Run Schools, so its hobson's choice and in my honest opinion it often depends on the Child and how that Child has been brought up, good and bad cases either side of the line.

Can only speak about my own schooling but it was absolutely terrible. Never felt challenged, never felt like I was learning anything. Teachers overly reliant on reading notes off overhead projectors instead of actually discussing the subject.

Most of my class were absolute f ucking idiots so we had to go at their pace most of the time.

I enjoy learning when it's sitting down reading a book, or trying something new, but the academic path for me was strewn with cow pats from the Devils own satanic herd.

Your normal comprehensive should be no different from these luxuries, that’s the point here Perchie as stated above .

Some people can’t afford to send their kids to these schools , so they lose out .

This is the inherent problem with socialism, Tom. You guarantee government funding and you remove competition. These schools (hospitals etc) no longer have to compete and standards start falling. As standards fall the government money keeps flowing in...in fact, the money increases to try and solve the problem. It becomes over bloated and not fit for purpose. But nothing changes because the government keeps pouring tax payer money into the black hole.

Good luck, Mr Cooper

The question is

you can have a better education if your parents can afford it ?

Nothing to do with socialism

You use to be able to have a better education in state schools. They were called grammar schools and there were three in Swansea which took in pupils based on ability not your background.

Ok, let's say a kid grows up in a low income family barely scraping by. When he leaves school he feels he has been held back by a shit education. But he grafts and works hard and eventually makes money. Should he now be allowed to have the choice to send his kids for a private education? Or do you insist he sends his kids for the same education he considered shit?

The state provides education for everyone. I personally believe people should be allowed to pay for a better one if they choose.

Good luck, Mr Cooper

Equally, the chap in Mo’s example might pay over the odds for housing and simply raise his family within the catchment area of a high-achieving school.

Privately-educated people are badly handicapped by an inability to mix with or empathise with the 93% of the population who have not been privately educated.

Seen Rees-Mogg in your local lately?

Thought not.

Divisive & depressing.

Why should state schools be less educating than private schools ?
That’s the issue here nothing to do with affordability etc

There should be no need to have to go to a private school to get a better education .

would most people pay fro private education if they can afford it probably yes
Is it right that money should buy a better education no.
What is more interesting is some universities policies.
Bristol and Exeter offer lower grades to prospective students who come from schools whose a level results are in the bottom 40% for A level results. Their evidence is that these students get better degree results than those from so called better schools.
Leeds for example offer lower grades if you are in poorer post code areas.
Most universities offer lower grades where students have been in care.
I once attended an open day in Lancaster where the admission tutor was asked why his university were offering lower grades than others. His reply was he didn't believe in penalising students for the quality of their education. This is a top 10 university and the current Sunday Times University of the Year.

If they are better then you are going to send your kids there. There shouldn't be a huge difference between them though, that should be the aim. I got a hell of a lot out of a state education, my only gripe would be the lack of diversity in subjects at a-level, but I guess that was down to the size of my school. Was very jealous to find you could take exotic subjects like economics, psychology and computing at a-level at other schools, hell, in my year the numbers weren't high enough for them to run a French a-level.

Upthecity!
