Wouldn't the money be better spent on building a first team capable of getting us back up? Why sign up more players for them when we need players who can come straight in to the first team and make a difference

The majority of our U23s will become first team players. Rather than buy replacements for sold players, the U23s will be promoted as their replacements. You wait for it guys, its always been part of their plans when relegation arrived.

That suggests that someone else will buy Clucas, Carroll, Fer, Naughton, Ayew etc? We will be stuck with most of them or be forced to give them away to get the wages down

Partly because finding players good enough to improve us that want to come here is very difficult. Partly because buying a Scottish kid costs the club peanuts compared to the £15-20m plus agents fees plus £2-3m a year in wages that an established senior player now goes for. All our Scots combined have cost far less than Clucas, and you can't argue they haven't contributed more than that ginger tw@t in their time here. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

They might all be far cheaper but if they never make the first team then it is still all money wasted. The Grade 1 academy facilities cost around £5M to run and that does not include the cost of recruitment of players or their wages. There was numerous reports of those figures when we were trying to upgrade to that status. Will we have a spare £5M a season in the championship? Or in League 1? We don't get bonus points in the Prem. For having a decent U23 team. Total waste of money and all just a big ego boost for Jenkins and co with no thought to the sustainability of it

As a total waste of money it pales in comparison to the Borja/Mesa/Clucas/Sanches etc. first team recruitment fiasco. Sanches agent could afford to run our academy himself on what we've paid him.

It went a long way in making the club more appealing for buyers.

I completely agree. The clubs recruitment is where the investment should have been made. Sadly it wasn't and now we are where we are. Millions wasted and headed for the Championship
