The UK will “have to have a customs union” with the EU after leaving the bloc, Jeremy Corbyn has said in remarks suggesting a further shift by Labour towards a softer Brexit.
Answering questions after a speech to manufacturers’ organisation the EEF, the Labour leader said some form of continued customs union would be imperative, in part to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.
Asked how Labour’s position on Brexit differed to that of the government, Corbyn said: “We have to have access to European markets, we have to have a customs union that makes sure we can continue that trade, particularly between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. That is key to it.”
He continued: “Being a member of the single market is automatic if you’re a member of the EU. If we’re not in the EU, we’re not automatically a member of it.

The timetable for Brexit means it happens in just over a year.
We still dont know what will really happen to the Irish border, the Customs Union, the City, fishing rights, farming subsidies, immigration etc. etc.
Its all terribly late, with very poor planning and even worse execution. It started with Lord Snooty and continues with May. In theory a lot of these issues could have been identified and indicative policy guidance included in the referendum documents so we knew what we were voting for or against.
Its a shambles already, it makes Swansea City look well run. |  |

Voting to Leave the EU, as was stated many many times prior to the vote meant leaving the Customs Union.
Being in the Customs Union means accepting freedom of movement which so many Leavers are opposed to, and not being able to strike Independent trade deals which is the primary benefit of Leaving. | |

Labour are not clear on Brexit, it's problematic as young voters tend toward remain and some Labour heartlands voted heavily to leave. [Post edited 21 Feb 2018 18:57]
