I can imagine that any sort of comparison of Putin to the leader of the movement that led to the death of 20 million of his former countrymen, women and children will not be seen favourably in Mother Russia. Putin may well be self aggrandising and hardly running a traditional 'democracy' but any relation to Hitler, or indeed, Stalin will hardly help in the current climate. |  |

The Soviets didn’t boycott the games either, as such, they opted instead to compete in the launch of a ‘socialist’ alternative ‘Peoples’ Olympiad’ to be held in Barcelona and sponsored by the republican government.
