Roy Bentley RIP on 21:53 - Apr 21 by Private_Partz | What a great post Tim. It is surprising how we all seem to remember Roy with affection. I noticed Lineker today announcing his passing and describing his career only to miss out on the fact he managed us. The crisp crunching twonk! |
Y'know 'PP' it's bloody weird, I'm in my early sixties now, (Bloody Hell!) but I could name all but two of the players in photo 'Dazzer' posted (Slattery and Rosser) before their names were 'put up' in a later post. I'd struggle to remember the names of a fair proportion of players in 'Liberty based' squads I'm sure? Yeah the 'first team' squads were invariably smaller 'back then,' especially for clubs of our size. And no doubt, the fact that recent squads have many 'foreign names' included, wouldn't help with their identification, and may well be a factor...? And there's another weird thing...but on immediately recognising 'Captain' Alan Williams, sitting next to Roy Bentley on the photo, straight away 'his song' flashed into my head... "His name is Alan Williams, he's the leader of our band, Without a doubt we'll shout it out, the best team in the land, When he leads us on the field, he leads us on to win, And when the Swans go marching in, then we'll begin to sing! Tra la la la, la la la la la, Tra la la la la la la la la la la.'' Those seemed 'simpler days' I seem to recall?

When I put names to Darran's pic, Doug Rosser was the one I struggled with... Tim, here's a team pic of the Swans 1962/63 Season. Good luck with the names...😀 EDIT This is when they also had the Orange/Tangerine kit [Post edited 22 Apr 2018 13:55]

'Bloody hell mun' Lone Ranger...I was five and a bit years old at the start of the 1962 season! LOL I was older (obviously) in the 1970 season and so, have a better recollection of the players/the seasons etc. What you've asked is a bit beyond me...but I'll have a bash...? Even though it's not a great picture...perhaps some of you posters, who are a 'tad older' can help with the 'player name spaces' I leave out? Back row L to R Brian Hughes, Brian Purcell, Johnny King, Mike Johnson, Herbie Williams, Seated L to R Barrie Jones, Colin Webster, Harry Griffiths, Graham Williams Brayley Reynolds and Jimmy MacLaughlin. That's my shot at it...now I'll prepare myself for the abuse! LOL But be kind boys, I was only five mun! Forgot to mention, but Barrie Jones was my favourite player way back then. I was the same . Could name them all except Doug Rosser and Carl Slee. There were some great songs in those days. Sang by Curley's Mob up the back of the North Bank.

I used to play football against “Curley’s mob” on a Sunday morning. They called themselves Morriston Forest. We later formed a team and entered the Senior League under the name Forest. Happy days.🤗

They were a really decent bunch. I used to stand near them for safety in numbers when we were taking our lives in our hands going to away matches. I guess the mindless violence and the complete lack of police protection eventually broke the group up.

Clive Slattery was a fitter down in Alcan in the 1990s, a really nice bloke. I'd never have guessed he was a Swans player until one of the boys told me. Very modest and down to earth chap.
