U23s in the team for next season? 18:17 - May 13 with 3595 viewssomersetsimon

I can understand why the last few managers have been reluctant to risk giving youngsters a run in the first team while we were under pressure in the Premier League, but surely we need to give them a chance next season.

We've seen that McBurinie can score goals in the Championship, even for a poor Barnsley side, and we know that Roberts is up to it, but who else - Maric, Byers, James, Garrick, Gorre? If we've got anyone on our books over the age of 20 that's not good enough for the Championship, then we need to move them on.

One positive from relegation.

Some of these u23 lads will have a chance to play for the Swans, the ones who stand up to the challenge will play regular.
As a premier league team there was very little chance. Hopefully some can push on and we can see a hunger and desire back within the first team. We will need 2/3 to be ready for the challenge.

Gorre has had chances to step up in loan deals, failed to do so, is 24 and out of contract. So not him.

GK - Benda
FB - Lewis
CB - Harries
MF - Byers
FW - James

I'd hope to see a few kids on the bench every week, and if they're able to snatch a starting place so much the better. There's enough quality in the u23s to provide all the depth we need next season.

Similar to the list I would pick.

If we don't spend on a set piece specialist Byers should be starting every game tbh.

I think all the evidence suggests that our u23’s have struggled on nearly all their various loans to date.

The Championship is not the u23 league.
For a recent example, Cardiff have gone for pace and power to get out of the league.

I'd hate to think we'd stoop to imitating Cardiff & Warnock. There's more than one way to skin a cat. Footballing sides can still have success at that level.

Would also like to see jack Evans added to that list I think all the players named look technically very good and would be able to play in the old Swansea way.
Kilkenny I’m sure you don’t want to see the academy products do well and intimating that we should start to mirror Cardiff’s long ball rubbish you’d have to swap the whole squad out.

The football sides that have had success have all spent big money.

Brentford are the best example of one that haven't necessarily spent big; good footballing side, lack a striker. Quality striker costs big money.

Jack's been immense this season. Reads the game really well.

Just needed to get all the Scots out of his way so he could have a good run of games.

I’d be surprised if he’s still here next season, we would need to push the envelope a bit on his contract a great example of a failed Loan deal, not every player suits every system and Bristol rovers was certainly a club that didn’t suit Roberts or Mcburnie.
In the u23s we have a good looking core of players that would not look out of place in the championship, although from what I understand out of the names mentioned Lewis,Byers and Evans are all out of contract and don’t seem to have been offered anything new.

We don't presently have a style of play to suit McBurnie. If we did, he'd have scored more here and Tammy would have been banging them in.

By the way, not seen anything but why was Roberts not in the squad today?

Youth contracts are typically handled at the end of the season, although it is a bit worrying that Byers hasn't been tied down.

Hopefully the cost-cutting doesn't start with the kids who win football matches and earn 1/50th what our "stars" do.

No place for him with Rangel having his leaving do.

Byers is a superb player. So we give him u23 player of the season & don't give him a new contract? Only we would do that.

I suspect given the lack of chances he's had for advancement (Maric getting the nod for the cup game) he might not want one. He left Watford for exactly that reason, after they got promoted and started spending big money when he'd just broken into their Championship squad.

Bollox.

I am a big fan of our Academy that produced the local lads Joey, Ben, and Jazz in short succession.
However, since the big money went in our lazy approach has been to buy ready made players (from fecking Falkirk), and block the path for local lads to develop. Jasper T makes same point.
None of the players head hunted have helped our first team in any meaningful way - in 7 years.

You carry on happy clapping the u23s on their lap of honour, i will keep pointing out the facts.
The U23s should be in the first team squad not waving to the crowd like the u9’s.

And here is another fact. Our last Premier League game vs Stoke included zero Academy products in the whole squad. Thats an Academy thats gone Missing In Action during our premier league years.

Enjoy the happy clapping ....

Fulham were very good last night that's what we need to aspire to.
