La Liga puts the Premier League in the shade. 21:43 - May 26 with 11033 viewstrampie

La Liga has won roughly 2/3rds of all European competitions over the last decade.

Lots of hype by the English regarding the Premier League but they are not even in the same ball park as the mighty La Liga teams.

That’s because La Liga top 3 or so clubs are better than the Premier Leagues top 3 or so clubs. The Premier League is better overall though, by some distance.

Judging a whole league on a cup competition is mental. Judging a whole league on a cup competition that only has 20% of that leagues teams in it even crazier.

Get a super league of 40 teams and combine the leagues and you would get a team from La Liga winning it in all probability and a host of pathetic La Liga teams making up the bottom 5 with the PL having the highest average finish. I could guarantee it.

Heard at the beginning of the season that somebody had amalgamated La Liga and the Premier League [including the Swans at the time] to produce a 40 team league table based on how the chess people do rankings, it was top 3 La Liga, bottom 3 Premier League and 11 of the top 20 La Liga teams.

6th in La Liga was Betis, for whom Swansea’s Jordi Amat played most matches when he wasn’t suspended.( twice sent off) And I bet we paid his wages o a large extent.
Why the heck did we let him go ?
They are in Europa League next year.

Says it all really doesn’t it. It’s a dire league. The squad value of the top Chanpionship team is worth more than half of La Liga.

Although chess....

La Liga is not a dire league, but there is a big gulf in the money and resources available to the top teams and the rest and I do beleive the PL is a more competitive league. Real and Barcelona trouser a significant proportion of the cash, when you consider the difference between what they get and what Atlético Madrid get it puts into perspective how well Diego Simeone has done.

Well I may have been exaggerating with the word ''dire'' but the majority of the teams in that league are, in top level terms, dire. This season was also pretty poor in terms of standard for the PL too, but the 3 worst teams went down and have certainly been replaced by 2 excellent sides in Fulham and Wolves who I would back to beat the majority of La Liga right now without even strengthening their sides.

Take the top 5 teams out of La Liga and it would be similar to the Championship, certainly would not be regarded as one of the major leagues in Europe. Do the same to the Premier League and the gulf in class between the Championship and the PL would still be pretty clear.

Zaragoza beat Arsenal and Seville beat Liverpool in European finals and those two Spanish sides only have one solitary La Liga title between them and that was in 1946.

Aye, must be better then. Rumour has it Ipswich Town are the best team in Europe. Possibly even the world.

Ipswich Town still hold the record for most successive unbeaten home games in European competition.

This includes playing Real Madrid, Barca twice , AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma and Saint-Etienne.

If we’re going to use largely irrelevant stats Liverpool have never won the Premier League but have appeared in 5 European finals during the Premier League years, winning twice.

Premier league must be much tougher than European competition then.

Ipswich Town have won the top division in England and have won one European competition but beat no Spanish teams in reaching and winning that final, Zaragoza and Seville beat historical top tier English teams in the final of European comps.

Ipswich played Barca twice in European competition and lost twice as they lost the away legs.

Football existed before the rebranding to the Premier League.
Its not irrelevant that teams outside the group of the most powerful La Liga teams beat teams that are inside England's most powerful group of teams [based on their historical domestic records] in European finals, it shows the depth that the Spanish have in their league.

Then by all means you can state they used to have depth.

They don’t anymore, the rebranding to the Premier League was a milestone in football where records prior and records since cannot be looked at in the same way. It wasn’t just a renaming exercise it was an overhaul of the financial side of the game and switched the balances of power in European football.

We both know La Liga has very little depth, you just seem like you are bored again and you go through these little episodes.

That would explain why Celtic are currently defending European Champions.

Alaves have spent most of their history in the lower tiers of Spanish football but they have been in a European final during the Premier League era only losing in extra time in the final to Liverpool.
Real Zaragoza beat Arsenal in a European final in the Premier League era, Mallorca have been in a European final during the Premier League era.
Valencia and Seville have won European titles during the Premier League era, Seville beating a few English teams in the final.
Athletic Bilbao and Espanyol have both been in European finals during the Premier League era, its not just Atletico, Real and Barca that have been winning European competitions.

Even Michael Laudrup's Getafe [a team that has spent most of its history in the lower leagues in Spain] beat Spurs at White Hart Lane during the Premier League era when Getafe were in the relegation zone of La Liga, Getafe went on to make the Quarter Finals only losing on away goals to Bayern.

Don't believe English hype they are not in the same ball park as the La Liga teams.

Middlesbrough and Fulham have been in European finals during the Premier League era.

You include the words Premier League in the title of your thread then say that football existed before the Premier League. It did, when Liverpool, Man U, Nottingham Forest and Villa were European champions. If you want to go back far enough I am old enough to remember Cardiff in a European semi final.
