For many, it would prove to be their last day...!!

Are these mainly or solely from the ranks of Protestant Ulstermen willing to serve HM .
Can't imagine why anyone from the nascent Irish republic would want to serve with those who fought to maintain the SIx Counties union with UK
From all over really, Perch. Lots of Scousers, Londoners, Brummies, Glaswegians etc.. mostly of Irish extract. There are Ulstermen in there obviously, though the RIR is the Ulster regiment really speaking. There are always a few from southern Ireland with family connections to the Brigade who join and nowadays a sprinkling of South Sea Islanders too.
There’s no religious dimension either. Both Catholics and Protestants abound and rub along quite happily. Decent sporting battalion too in my day.

I've often wondered if, hypothetically a similar situation was required today, how many young men do you think would sign up? Does the country have anything like the moral courage to undertake such an operation? History is littered with stories of Empires and Nations which have become wealthy, lethargic, complacent and devoid of the fortitude to defend themselves.
Just come back from the Ardennes region and my god those civilians suffered unimaginable hardships, especially during the battle of the bulge. If anyone fancies something different get out there for a few days, gives you a totally different perspective on life. Normandy, Flanders the Somme wherever , all hugely moving and not enough time to see all you feel you should. If you don't get moved to tears when faced with thousands upon thousands of white portland headstones in perfectly kept cemeteries you've got no soul.

If the youth of today were around at the time of D day, we would be ruled by the Germans now......
The soldier stood and faced God..... Which must always come to pass..... He hoped his shoes were shining... Just as brightly as his brass....
"Step forward now...you soldier... How shall I deal with you ? Have you always turned the other cheek ? To My Church have you been true?"....
The soldier squared his shoulders and said... "No... Lord... I guess I haven't.... Because those of us who carry guns... Can't always be a saint....
I've had to work most Sundays... And at times my talk was tough.... And sometimes I've been violent.... Because the world is awfully rough....
But.... I never took a penny... That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of time... and the bills got just too steep....
And I never passed a cry for help... Though at times I shook with fear... And sometimes...God.. forgive me.... I've wept unmanly tears.....
I know I don't deserve a place... Among the people here..... They never wanted me around.... Except to calm their fears....
If you've a place for me here... Lord... It needn't be so grand.... I never expected or had too much.... But if you don't....I'll understand"....
There was a silence all around the throne... Where the saints had often trod.... As the soldier waited quietly.... For the judgment of his God....
"Step forward now.... you soldier... You've borne your burdens well..... Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets.... You've done your time in Hell".......!!
