I’ve finally had chance to watch the episode that aired on the 14th and find myself getting more and more frustrated with the format of what used to be the Beeb’s flagship politics programme. It’s in need of a good shake-up.
How much better had it simply consisted of a debate between John Mann and Dominic Grieve with David Dimbleby in the chair? An informed pro-Brexit view from the left and its obverse from the right with all the screen-time eating frippery and distraction stripped away.
As it was I wasted over half the programme hitting the fast-forward button getting to the segments of any worth. The audience was the first to go. Isabel Oakeshott, ever decorous but in this context dispensable; Matthew Wright, this week’s token non-politico making the invariably pointless contribution; Leanne Wood, Penygraig’s platitude-mumbling numbskull illustrating perfectly why calling polytechnics universities doesn’t make it so.
The purpose of a programme like that ought to be to provoke and inform, not to parade a selection of cliches. The place where, as Runciman said, ”the truth goes to die.” |  |

Yes. Despite having described herself as a hack on previous occasions.
Dimbleby was most put out as well and strenuous in his defence of her.
Actually that bloke in the audience was one of the best bits of the show last week. Quite transparently not a Tory by any stretch of the imagination, when he said ‘I’d rather listen to a legally trained Conservative than a tabloid hack’ or words to that effect, it was fantastic.
Quite why she is so loved by the Beeb to receive such frequent airtime is beyond me. You’d have a better informed opinion from the pigeon that’s currently taunting my dog in the garden.
There is a real issue though that people like Grieve who is well informed, thoughtful and, indeed clever (whatever your politics) is given a false equivalence with people like Isabel Oakeshott who is none of those things (whatever your politics). It kills any sense of political debate as even the clever ones resort to sound bites as that’s what the increasingly vacuous public latch onto to make themselves feel like they’re up-to-speed.
Look at the nonsense about a ‘brexit dividend’. It’s utter bollox, yet because it’s a catchy sound bite people grab hold of it with the desperation of a drowning man grabbing hold of a passing stick. |  | | |

To illustrate my point on the so called TEF though, Swansea Met finished above Southampton I believe.
Fact is you can’t measure what matters, and so the measurements are fairly useless proxies. Universities are being turned into extensions of schools, with spoon fed materials, passing exams and grade inflation the order of the day, plus ‘fat cat profit driven business discipline’. Genuine education is largely being forgotten. You have probably read more books in the last year....actually let’s just say opened more books than either student cohort I have dealt with over the same period. Maybe I’m being unkind to the many excellent committed students, but immediate google gratification without thinking is now a ubiquitous first port of call. [Post edited 18 Jun 2018 15:23]

I couldn’t begin to count the number of things I don’t understand in 2018, but that’s one I continually scratch my head over. |
I think it happened when gaining wealth became seen as more important than honesty, honour or integrity and that being rich enabled you to get away with almost anything.
People with a lot of money can sometimes consider themselves to be in the elite even when they are total scumbags and I'll put Tony Blair up as my nomination for that position!
