Spent many a great evening in the Gari from the mid 80’s to when we left to go to the Liberty .... Fantastic place, full of character, Sandfields life and all ...... From Joe Cleary to Rainbow to Gilbert to John the Bank to Philly .....👠Happy Days indeed a place forever in my heart ðŸ‘👠

My first ever Blackpool trip was with the Gari crowd in the late 70s. Complete mad house of a trip but loved it all the same. Houlihan (?sp) was the landlord then.

Mike Houlihan it was mate just before Joe Cleary. Another great Philly James story we went on tour to Holland in 1990/91 I think it was with Sandfields somebody dropped out last minute so with the bus outside ready to go Dicky Price went into the Robin Hood & asked if anybody fancied a trip to Holland .....Philly James stood up & said count me in the rest as they say is history one hell of a Tour ðŸ‘😂ðŸ»âš½ï¸ Legend and Gentle Giant R.I.P. Yep MIke Houlihan thanks. I believe he took over the The Vic in Mumbles but it all went tits up and he ended up incarcerated in the upstairs flat with the Baliffs trying to get in. Another RIP.

I was in the Vic for his "closing down sale" everything must be drunk, and it was! Mike kept a small axe behind the bar and (I can neither confirm or deny this story by the way) the story goes somebody complained they were cold so he came round the bar, axe in hand, took their chair, chopped it up and threw it on the fire. True story or urban legend...... Calling Philly james a gentle giant, I saw him throw someone out of the Gari once and it wasn't gentle! Not a man to flock around with.

Nice guy Dougie, good company, and not a bad boxer. He won the Welsh Middleweight title in the early 1980's, but found it tough when he went in with the better fighters like Errol Christie and Mark Kaylor.

If i remember right he was in demand for warm up fights for the real top guys as they knew they'd be in a scrap once they got in the ring with him. Must be well into his 60's now.
