2018 - 20 pens [in 38 games, not even finished the group stages yet]
1990 - 18
1998 - 18
2002 - 18
2006 - 17
1986 - 16

Just watching the mighty Denmark vs France this afternoon, and I thought there were a couple of obvious dives from Giroud and Griezmann in the first half.
If VAR isn't looking for cheating the problem is even worse, IMO. | |

I quite often bet on penalties being awarded in games, so obviously I've had a good World Cup so far. I'm knocking it on the head now, the odds are crazily low, it's usually about 5/2 -7/2, now down to 7/4 and even as low as 6/4 with some companies, no value at all. | |

It's what economists refer to as perverse incentives.
Soft and non penalties are being given all over the place, but there is apparently no additional scrutiny being given to players diving.
The whole thing just hasn't been thought through properly. | |
