Messi isn't an entire team you know, and it is possible for players to have bad games. Iceland stuck three men on Messi and defended well. Argentina aren't the best of teams when together and what they do lack is a decent defense.

His successes, including chile at international level,were based on a pressing game. I don’t think the super stars in the Argentina squad want to play like that hence his strange team selection against Croatia.
Players clearly do not want to play for him looks like a power struggle. I expect them to go to a back 4 against Nigeria- which is what the senior players are reported to want. If they play with a back 3 the way they did against Croatia, the pace of the Nigerian forward line could embarrass them big time.
Short of a near miraculous transformation he is surely out of that job after the World Cup.
