The real answer is mundane. I am an international expert on chicken bacterial infections and was trying to develop research collaboration with people in Colombia. Off to Philippines next week- start of new project

Really? Out of interest, do you support the EU ban on the chlorinated chicken process? A simple yes or no would be enough, if you don;t fancy a technical reply. . .

Yes. Not because the chlorination itself is a public health issue but it is used by the US to cover poor production and welfare standards. There is a lot to it so can PM if you want the full story.

Thanks Prof, appreciate that. I don't really have the skills to evaluate any detailed technical information, but that was my gut instinct too, and I was just after some kind of independent verification.

Actually the one thing I am particularly interested in is whether the use of chlorination significantly increases the probability of avian flu outbreaks, and if so by what sort of magnitude?

Should have no effect. Flu is really an issue in live birds. Normally spread by faeces rather than respiratory route. Chlorination is really there to reduce Salmonella as the US does not have the effective but costly controls mandatory in the EU. The UK and Germany have led on this.
