Smashing Pumpkins always started and ended with everyone with the tortued, nihilistic genius/wierdness of Corgan. An acquired taste, no doubt.
But the underrated aspect of these icons is the manic percussion of one Jimmy Chamberlain, drummer. Talent in the neighborhood of Moon, Bonham, and Peart. And sounding pretty damn good still in his 50's.

Typical garage band drummer, trying to sound like Dave Grohl.
a bit unfair as they were contemporaries of Nirvana. 'Gish' was our several months ahead of 'Nevermind' where Grohl made his debut. Drumming on songs like 'Cherub Rock' is exemplary though I find Corgan a bit whiny at times. Quite like '1979' as a song though.

They were far more musical than Nivana. My observation, not comparison, was fair.

31 song setlist! Lasted over 3 hours. 9th time I've seen The Pumpkins, Billy Corgan solo, or his other band Zwan. At 51, he's still got it. Melinda thinks tonight should count twice lol.
