We won’t be signing anyone that ‘well known’ anytime soon

And neither should we. We've already got a load of failed PL players on inflated wages. We don't need any more. I'd rather we start building again and find some up and coming talent to complement our 'stars'.

Not for someone who can’t show respect for the country he’s living and working in.
Can you imagine a British player, playing in Germany and showing disrespect towards them - all because they bombed his great grans during the War.

Who made you the fecking judge and jury ?

You want to force actions on people ? Why ?
Other clubs have got through it.

Perhaps Harry should check all his potential signings with you first ?

Did you even read the link I sent other day. If you read it you would have seen his reason for not wearing poppy. As i.ve said before don't like the guy and hope he doesn't sign and i don't agree with his views on life but if your going at least slag the guy at least read his statement first.

Dear Mr Whelan

I wanted to write to you before talking about this face to face and explain my reasons for not wearing a poppy on my shirt for the game at Bolton.

I have complete respect for those who fought and died in both World Wars - many I know were Irish-born. I have been told that your own Grandfather Paddy Whelan, from Tipperary, was one of those.

I mourn their deaths like every other decent person and if the Poppy was a symbol only for the lost souls of World War I and II I would wear one.

I want to make that 100% clear .You must understand this.

But the Poppy is used to remember victims of other conflicts since 1945 and this is where the problem starts for me.

For people from the North of Ireland such as myself, and specifically those in Derry, scene of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre, the poppy has come to mean something very different. Please understand, Mr Whelan, that when you come from Creggan like myself or the Bogside, Brandywell or the majority of places in Derry, every person still lives in the shadow of one of the darkest days in Ireland’s history — even if like me you were born nearly 20 years after the event. It is just a part of who we are, ingrained into us from birth.

Mr Whelan, for me to wear a poppy would be as much a gesture of disrespect for the innocent people who lost their lives in the Troubles — and Bloody Sunday especially - as I have in the past been accused of disrespecting the victims of WWI and WWII.
It would be seen as an act of disrespect to those people; to my people.
I am not a war monger, or anti-British, or a terrorist or any of the accusations levelled at me in the past. I am a peaceful guy, I believe everyone should live side by side, whatever their religious or political beliefs which I respect and ask for people to respect mine in return. Since last year, I am a father and I want my daughter to grow up in a peaceful world, like any parent.

I am very proud of where I come from and I just cannot do something that I believe is wrong. In life, if you’re a man you should stand up for what you believe in.

I know you may not agree with my feelings but I hope very much that you understand my reasons.

As the owner of the club I am proud to play for, I believe I owe both you and the club’s supporters this explanation.

Yours sincerely,

James McClean

Still don't like the guy and he not even good enough for Ireland and we're shite at Moment, was just getting annoyed at the inaccurate crap on this site as his reasons for not wearing poppy had noting to do with the wars as it was about loss of innocent life which I am sure we are all sad and angry it happened on both sides of the sea

I don't like the guy either, I think on the pitch he can be far to reckless and he is not actually that good of a footballer either. You really should take on online poker if you can read people's mind and not even have to be beside them either. Also maybe give this attachment below a read he is by no means a saint but one thing about him he loves the community he is from and does give back to them.

Decent letter that & for me is an acceptable reason for him not to wear the poppy, if I was his employer I'd have no issue with that - provided there were not a raft of other explanations as to why he couldn't "play on Sunday's/in the rain or cold" etc but I would be deselecting him from the squad on match days around Remembrance Sunday & not paying him his salary as he is, in effect, making himself unavailable to work in those matches impacted.

All that said I do not believe we have any interest in him or Hart so I guess a moot point.

Thanks for the fair and reasonable response. Like you I really hope we don't sign either and don't think we will. I don't like him as outlined previously but have to say it f that is his reasons for not wearing the poppy I can see his point as in parts of north it still is a major thing for them on both sides. Here in the south we have long since moved on as previous posters point out the war was 100 years ago for us so it's a non issue hence why many Irish players from Republic of Ireland have worn poppy is O'Shea, Roy keane, Robbie keane Duff & given etc.
