The Best Live Album 16:21 - Aug 4 with 17515 viewszedlep

Just sat here on hols in Sicily chatting with my beautiful wife. “Which live album do you think is the most important in my life?” I asks. (Bit inebriated truth be told). She names two out of three that are ‘up there’. What are the best/top for you guys? For me it’s (in reverse order):
3. The Song Remains the Same - Zeppelin ( saw it at the Castle Cinema - great memories)
2. If You Want Blood, You Got It - AC/DC “Angus. Angus!”
Number fecking one! Live in the Heart of the City -Whitesnake (I’ve got a hell of a length Coverdale l!)

What do you reckon?

If you want to hear a very complex hard rock band perform the near-impossible task of staying true to their studio sound, Rush's Exit Stage Left (1981 album and video) is excellent.

Almost certainly doesn't count as best live album but hey ho...

Adding to my 4k+ collection on mp3 player by ripping the free cds given away in Classic Rock magazine, one had some Alter Bridge stuff from their live albums, just wow. Next stop will be to buy those live albums...

What a good shout. I thought I was the only person in the world who owns and occasionally listens to this album.

PS nothing to do with Darran and his wackadoodle club.....

Best side of a banging album. Fantastic stuff.

Tim Buckley (Jeff's dad) Dream Letter Live in London 1968 is also a great listen. Guy doesn't drop a note. It was recorded when he was 21; amazing voice, could absolutely see where Jeff got his voice from.

Thanks, I will have to check that out. I'm familiar with Jeff but not Tim. Sad that neither made it past 30.

I picked that side of Exit Stage Left partly because the two albums that contained Xanadu and The Trees (Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres) were recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire in 1977/78.

Long before I'd ever heard of Swansea City Football Club, one of the very few things I knew about Wales was Rockfield Studios.

Just to add to this - Geoff Tate is playing at the Muni Theatre in Pontypridd this November. I went to see him at the same venue a few months ago and he and his new band played all of Operation Mindcrime as well as a few other Queensryche songs.
a really good night out and it was only £20

The Macc Lads - Live at Leeds (the who?)

Seen them in Dora’s. Around 88/89 as a mate of mine booked them. I thought they were rubbish but of course that just my opinion.

The best thing about live music is when you see a band and come away liking them more than at the start of their show. Lucky enough to have experienced that a few times but unfortunately theyre not albums.

Having said that my favourites are...

Trilogy - The Cure (Berlin)
Hyde Park - RHCP
L@BBC - Souixsie & The Banshees
Raw Melody Man - NMA
Live on 2 Legs - Pearl Jam

Concerts that would have made good live albums...

The Garden Party (1990) - The Cure
Glastonbury 1997 - Radiohead

Queen - We will Rock you circa 1982 (Montreal)

inxs - live baby live 1991 (Wembley)

Big country - live at barrowlands 1993

Depeche Mode - take your pick, the best live act I've seen.

Watched Big Country a few weeks back (again), and you are right, revisited 'live at Barrowlands' what a band, RIP Stu.

Talking Heads-Stop Making Sense

The BBC live/in concert series released since the late 80s has some real gems including a remarkably good New Order set from Glastonbury 1987.

Sadly 'Rank' by The Smiths is just that. A remarkably poor album from a band who were on blistering form on the 'Queen is Dead' tour from where the songs are lifted. Perhaps these things work best as a 'concert' rather than 'cut together' live album

Live albums in the 70’s/80’s were pretty good but in the age of the internet they’ve by and large become redundant. It’s a record contract filler these days and you can pretty much dial up most gigs on YouTube.

Eb, my favourite live album of the ‘80s without a doubt has to be this...

To have seen them gig in their pomp was an absolute privilege. Feckin’ incredible musicians!

An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.
