A terribly sad state of affairs. I feel for the boy and especially his parents who have also had to live with the impact of addiction. Sadly, there are thousands of people in this country in an identical situation, it doesn’t only impact on the individual it’s also their families. Gambling can be a major issue and is something which is permeating all levels of society, just look prevalent it is today and how many gambling companies are sponsoring football clubs. It’s big business.

Don't get me wrong i'm not slating him gambling can effect anyone it's just the denial behind it (like most addictions).He was paying for a hotel room so he could gamble in peace!.I'm glad he's turned it around and is now educating other young footballers.It's always better hearing from someone who has gone through it.Betting apps should be scrapped or highly monitored.

I've had major issues myself over the years, lost 20 grand in a year about 8 years ago-still paying for it now. I never had a problem with football and horse racing betting, but once the roulette machines came into the shops, that was when I started to bet heavily. I've deliberately got an old phone, and won't upgrade it, so I can't bet on-line. I try and drink in Pubs that are nowhere near a Bookies, because it's after a few pints, that the heavy betting kicks in. Unfortunately my local is right opposite a Ladbrokes, so when I leave, I usually walk the long way round so I'm not going directly past it.
I've just about got it under control, I still bet, but only what I can afford. The very very occasional blow-out on the machines, but that will stop completely once the Govt reductions on stakes come in. I have a lot of sympathy for this young man, though I completely understand why most people wouldn't.

Yes agreed, I was thinking of support in the widest sense where someone actively takes an interest in the well being of a youngster on thousands of pounds a week rather than wait for him to ask.

Good luck beating the addiction. It took government more than a decade to do something about the addictive Casino/Slot and FOBT games in shops. Sadly the gambling sector has a lot of politicians in their payroll. Like smoking, they should ban betting companies advertising on TV. Timebomb of normalising gambling.

If you own a bookie's then indeed you are truly blessed, never met a poor one, if you use gambling to contribute to your bills and mortgage then what happens when you lose ? no heating ? no house ?

What an odd assessment.
How I allocate money generated by myself is my own concern. if i generate more funds I might use it to overpay my mortgage or spend it on new carpets, holidays, my car or any other activity that I choose.
I don't own a bookies but in contrast to your lazy, oft repeated cliched comments about "never seen a poor bookie' you clearly know very little about the gambling world.
The reason that you perhaps never see a poor bookie is probably because they are bust and out of business and I would doubt very much such individuals rush up to people in the street shouting 'I used to be a bookie but I went bust'
I know of quite a number of bookies who are no longer in business having been wiped out financially.
Or are you of the opinion that every bookie past and present is loaded and is in the only business in the world where there are no business failures.
Just two weeks ago Sunbets ( the second major online bookies in the last 6 weeks to do so) asked me to withdraw my funds from their online account because they are shutting down their operation, in fact the Australian bookmakers providing their online service is losing so much money that they have bought out their contract for providing services to Sunbets for £40m to end their liabilities.
I know many individual on course bookies who have gone bust after being wiped out by punters, a number personally. One I used to work for around the Scottish dog tracks as his tic tac man on occasion. he permanently lived on his nerves before losing his bank for about the third time and packing it in.
Maybe you want to do a bit of research before coming up with every well worn inaccurate lazy cliche in the book on the subject as of course do so many other members of the public.
"You never see a poor bookie" must be one of the most oft repeated inappropriate sayings blurted out by zillions of people who have never really thought about what they are saying there is.
It's just an old standard isn't it?

When one person says to another ' I have never met a poor bookie', to me they are basically saying don't gamble it's a mugs game!
It's just a warning, I don't think they mean it as you may think they do.

A big problem with footballers and many football fans getting involved, the football-related gambling advertising is incredible these days, it wasn't as prevalent in the past.
