I watched it tonight for the first time in years...and really enjoyed it. Jodie was great.

Helped along by 2 bottles of Brewdog Lost Lager dry-hopped Pilsner from Tesco. (2 for £4)
A bloody awesome drop to be fair.

Dr Who is children’s flim-flam, Daz. They could have cast that purple dinosaur thing in the lead and it wouldn’t really make a jot of difference.

Bond? Bond is different. Fleming’s series of fourteen novels don’t just make a reasonable claim to literary heft within the spy genre they outline a very particular personality, with a very specific lineage: a half-Swiss, Etonian scion of Scots nobility bearing a commission in the Royal Navy. Fleming repeatedly stated that when he was plotting the Bond narrative he envisioned him in the person of Hoagy Carmichael.

This is James Bond...

I know but it really grates on me when some walloper writes in The Guardian that it’s about time for a black Bond. I routinely scrunch the paper up, aim it at the bin, full force, and shout ‘YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT, YOU TVVAT!!

Did you read the report?

Bloke called James Bond who worked for Ian Fleming as a spy in the war. Seemed like a good shout for how he came up with the name. After all, we know he used a real person for coming up with the name for Blofeld.

No I hadn’t seen that, Lisa. I have read several accounts and seen a couple of interviews where Fleming avers that JB is a composite of several secret service officers and pre-war acquaintances he had known.

Edit: I forgot too say that Fleming was a keen amateur natural historian and he is on film telling Alan Whicker that he thought of the (then) famous Ornithologist James Bond and thought “ah! perfect.”

Common sense speaks! Indeed! The sheer lunacy of the way PC thinking has gone beyond what is required in certain situations. Just to prove some kind of "Yeah, we, I, us are so 'with-it', Trendy-Wendy and 'right-on' here" point"????

If the BBC should do a costume-drama of Wuthering Heights I suggest Cathy does not become a 'geezer' called Clive.

But Cathy is a woman. A female character. Written as such.

The Doctor is a non human alien of indeterminate gender who adopts a human body on earth to fit in. That body could be male or female - it’s an alien.

Bond should be played by a man, because it’s a male character, written as such.

A nice story, mind. Good looking chap.

I don’t know whether you are aware of this or not but another possible, indeed quite probable, sartorial influencer of the Bond character was Sir Oswald Mosley: The silk shirts, knitted silk ties, custom hand-made cigarettes, the leonine libido. Fleming spent a fair bit of time with Mosley socially in the mid-30s. Mosley’s then girlfriend, later wife, Diana Mitford was a relative of Fleming’s. Mosley, an Olympic fencer, taught Fleming epee and sold him his Belgravia flat at Ebury street, not too far from you, Lisa. It survived the war intact and is pretty much as it was then.

Tell me this doesn’t just scream Bond’s digs....

He certainly looked the part.

Darran is so right.

Dr Who is a 2000 year old alien with two hearts who travels through time. Being played by a woman would be completely unrealistic.

Here's my take right or wrong? For credibility sake, for fan sentimentality, for tradition? Many would IMO think things are best left untouched as they were?

Perish the thought of a female Frankenstein monster/creation with two bolts on her neck wearing heavy deep sea sized diving boots being chased through a village by a vengeful torch carrying mob? Perish the thought of a (not cyberman) cyberwoman invasion whereupon the first target of an Earth invasion would be Dorothy Perkins and (polyester curtains!) Dunelm. I am seriously expecting the BBC to adapt a cyberwoman storyline in the future.
