Lovely but got to be absolutely fresh from the sea.

Best I've ever had was at Cancale in Britanny.

My absolute favourites. A splash of lemon and a drop of tabasco, perfection.

To each his own.

This is the way to eat them.

Soak them in salty water and leave any loose skin on them. A common mistake is to pierce skin.

I'm with the OP.

Tried them several times over the years to see if my taste has changed, because I like most shellfish, but I still think its like swallowing a lump of gristly, salty snot.

Yerrgghhh.....

Great place for seafood. I have also had oysters in the Charente which are from saltmarsh beds. Totally different flavour than Breton. Almost spicy.

Spent some time in New Zealand in the late 60’s, visited Bluff, a small sea port on the Southern tip of the South Island.

The place was renowned for its oyster beds, a group of us bought a sack of oysters direct from a fishing boat, cost us next to nothing, and set about shelling them. A splash of lemon and down they went, I could just about manage a dozen.

I see what you did there.

I wouldn't want to shell out on that, even a couple of squid. They'll probably out-mussel their opponents, anyway.

Life is good.
The weather is so much better. Warm and sunny most days. Had some friends over a couple of weeks ago and one day we all went down the local beach around 9.00am for a dip in the surf, followed by breakfast in beach cafe. Huge waves reminiscent of Aberavon beach in my youth, but the water was so warm.
Beer on tap is all of the lager variety, which is what you want when its scorchio. They serve it in iced pint glasses out of the freezer and usually give you a little snack to go with it, a dish of nuts or olives. Very civilised. Cost of a pint 2 - 2.50 Euros.
I'm not drinking much beer at home, usually go for a giant gin & tonic (bottle of gin in Lidl is 4.15 euros). Also expanding my acquaintance with Spanish wine, which is fab. You can get a drinkable bottle in the supermarket for a euro. Current favourite is white Rioja from Lidl at 2 euros.
Coming back to uk on Santander/Portsmouth ferry next weekend for 10 days. Will take in the Swans matches v Blackburn and Reading.

Best one I've found so far is Estrella Damm, brewed in Barcelona. Mahon is good too.
